Axle and gear question

I am looking to lift my Bronco and put 35's under it, so I want to re-gear it with 4:10's. My friend recently did this to his 2002 f250 and it cost him $1900 front and rear. Is that outrageous or what? I guess I wasn't expecting it to be that much. I figured $1000.

Oh, and how do I know if my 96' Bronco has a Posi unit? I was told that it would be an additional $500 if I wanted to add one. Do I need it if it doesn't have one.
