I have been looking for a 01-03 F350 for about a month now. Started looking at an XL 5.4L 4x4. After looking at some used trucks, I have upsold myself a little to a supercab xlt or lariat powerstroke. Seems like you can get a "better deal" on a higher end model.
Not sure exactly what I am going to do with the truck, but the car is failing and I want to make sure I cover my bases. I will be pulling a dual axle closed motorcycle trailer on occasion and am going to be rennovating a building, so it may get some work (possibly plowing the lot). I drive a lot and would rather spend a little more up front and get it back on resale than dump my $$$ into the tank.
My question is used 7.3 or maybe go for a new 6.0. I have read a lot of horror stories about the 6.0. I am not going to be racing the thing, so reliability and maintenance costs are more important to me. Just curious what peoples thought were. Anything I should know about the 7.3? Maintenance costs? Reliability? MPG?
My 2002 7.3 has 30K miles on it, and has been reliable. I had 2 oil leaks both covered under warrenty, and the only maintenance has been oil and fuel filter. I've been doing the maintenance my self, the oil change is about $30 (every 5K) and fuel filter is about $10 (every 15k). I wouldn't hesitate to buy the 7.3.
i have 48000 on mine and the only prob. was a bad cam pos. sensor(which is common with these trucks)which was under warr. when the dealer fixed that i was also told the exhaust back pessure sensor was bad as well and it was replaced. oh yea, when i first got it, it was a little hard to start when cold and i did not plug it in, the dealer replaced the glow plug controler but it still did it. i switched to 5-40 synthetic oil and now it starts fine in
the cold. another thing i can tell you is ford did change the front diff from '01 to '02, the ;02s have a dana 60 front compared to the dana 50 in the '01s and older(non dually-srw)
oil change at grease monkey-$100.00 with synthetic
fuel filter at auto zone-$30.00(rmilchman where do you find them for $10.00 save me some $$$)
coolant additive-$6-$8 a bottle
trans service $120.00
Go with the 7.3. They are less problematic. The 6.0 has more slightly more power but the 7.3 has proven it self time and time again. The 6.0 is a great motor but like anything elese brand new, wait a few years so the kinks can be worked out.
