Im caught between two trucks here, im looking at a 4.9 with about 150,000 miles and a 5.0 with about 100,000. both run equally the same but im thinking about the future here, which truck is gonna give me the least amount of trouble and last the longest?
The 4.9 will win for the lasting long catagory, check out the "How many miles" thread in this fourm and you will see they last very long. Theres some people here with 300K+ on them.
The 4.9 is a better truck motor as well, but this forum is biased. The 300 produces better low end torque. I think you may be able to get a tick better mileage out of the 302. 300's have a very strong bottom end, so they can pull and run for a long time. But if you are a careful driver, take care of the oil, the 302 will last a long time too.
A lot depends if you like to be a little different. Everyone has a 8, and when you tell people you have a 302, well no one is impressed. When you tell them you have a 300 6, you can watch some of them make @sses of themselves when they bad mouth V6 engines, and then correct them that its an inline.
But to like an I6, you need to be willing to be a little different and not care too much what some more ignorant people think.
well its hard to say which will last longer...really on how the previous owner(s) matained the engine and truck itself. but i would say the 300 for a daily driver and occasional work truck.
I had a 81 F150 Inline 6 with 400,000K and it did not use any oil between changes. There is a wrecking yard here that has a waiting list for Inline sixes, and a pile of 302s you can have for next to nothing.
crashed13, It the same here 302's are $100 and you can buy as many as you want. most of the yards that have 300's want $400 for a running 300 (and there is a waiting list). the u-pull yards have some 300's but your buying an engine that is basicly an unknown core.
you gotta love an engine with 7 mains and a gear drive cam
The 300 will usually out tow the 302, and last a lot longer to boot(487,152 miles as of this morning :P). I always like the way people's eyes bug out when i tell them i have a cubic inch 6 cyl
tractor trailers are inline six's. i'm not a fan of v style engines. i'd go w/the 300. its real easy to work on because of all the extra room under the engine.
ps i would ask this question the the 87-96 f series truck forum. i have a feeling the responses in the inline six forum are going to be a bit biased lol.

just curiousity...what do you mean by "7 mains"??
also...a note to the topic of this discussion...my inline six has almost 300,000 on it, and i can't kill it...i've been waiting for it to die, but since it won't i decided to start putting some new parts on it...gaskets, cap, rotor...basic tune-up/maintenance...and, even though it runs a little rough and gets poor mileage due to a shot-to-sheeyite carbeurator, i love it...and i'll put another inline six in it's place when it does die...

stick with the 300. ive had 2 fords with 300s and they are without a doubt the best engines i have ever had. i have never had a problem and i am willing to bet my 88 F-150 with the 300 close to 250k would still be running today if i had not totaled it, 7 years ago.
here's my thought on this, i have an 87 f-150 with a 300 6, i couldn't ask for a better truck, good mileage, i can boast 22mpg highway. it's got 129,000 kms, if your canadian you'll know what i mean, i recently house sat for my dad and i got to use his truck, he has a 1990 ford f-150 with a 302 in it, also a good motor, they both have their ups and downs, i personally prefer a 300 cuz i don't drive very fast, and i can go up any hill with a load in my truck and maintain a speed limit, 302s are fun at intersections and in mustangs. and on the note of a 302 getting bette mileage than a 300 i think thats a load of crap, my dads truck is a PIG.
