I recently removed my instrument cluster, trying to install some white face gauges. I screwed up, and basically got frustrated enough to throw the cluster across the garage into the wall. Needless to say, I need a new one. Is there any problem in replacing the cluster with a used one ? I have a 97 E.B. 4x4, and I know the 97-98 gauges were the same layout. I have seen used ones for like $75 or so. Although the mileage won't be exactly the same, I could get lucky enough to find one with similar miles on the odo. Can I just swap them out ? Do I need to calibrate or reset anything ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.............
To my understanding the ECU (Computer) knows the cluster that was used with it through an EPROM that is not reset but simply disconnecting the power to it and has to be done by Ford. All you will get when you try to start is a blinking Theft light through the PATS system. I think Ford wants something outrageous like 350 to do this. Sorry M8 wish I had better news for you.

$350 to swap out the cluster and reprogram? Will the vehicle run with the new (replacement) cluster until it is done ? My wifeworks for a (S)tealership, and I could get the service guys to reprogram the gauges if I swap them, but if the truck don't run, I can't get it there to do it........
If you go to a junker and buy a cluster the truck WILL NOT START. Unfortunately this is one of those instances where you NEED to go the dealer. They program it for your keys and mileage. Been there done that...............

You know, that's what a Ford Tech told me too, but a few '97 and '98 Expy owners on this forum corrected me when I mentioned this once. Recently I was looking for a spare PATS key on ebay and MOST of the listings specify '97-'02. HMMMM?

its 99-02 that you cant.
03 and 04 have the pats in the pcm, so once again, they can be swapped by the customer.
The 97-98's DO have PATS systems, but they differ from 99-02 models. 97/98's need only 1 working key to program additional ones, while the others require both ORIGINAL keys to program additional keys. I've programmed plenty of keys for my truck ,so I know this works, but does this apply to my gauge issue ???
ok, i the expy does have pats where the f150 doesnt, (its a standalone module) so what i should have said is that the 97 and 98 pats in the expy is totally independant of the cluster. Swapping clusters in a 97, 98, 03 and 04 can be done at home.
Trust me, i am a ford master tech, but i just switched careers, so i no longer work at a dealership.

If you take the time to actually read the thread you have resurrected, your question is already answered.
