I have a '97 F-350 4WD PSD crew cab, 62K miles. Driving in to the driveway couple nights ago, after climbing the hill to my house, stepped on the brakes, and very, very difficult to get brakes to apply. I knew that the shoes were getting pretty thin, so last night, I stuck new shoes on it. Still have the same problem, fluid level in reservoir at max, brake light is lit on the dash, feels like no power boost at all. Checked booster line for leaks, none apparent.
A gearhead buddy of mine told me that the diesel has an external vacuum pump, which may have failed. Any tips on where I can go from here? Is this vacuum pump internal or external? Any help with this is greatly appreciated!
I am not sure about the new ones, I had an 85 Ford with an international diesel in it, the vacuum pump was on the lower front right side of the engine with a belt going to it. It was easy to replace.
The vacuum pump is located on the left side of the engine and is external. You have to remove the pulley and belt and then you can get to the three bolts that hold it on. I would suspect it with the problem you're having, either that or the booster is leaking vacuum. I do se the pumps fail more often than the boosters though.
Check on the left fender well and I think you will find a little manifold where the vacuum from the pump is distributed to the various users. Check the hoses that are plugged on to this manifold and make sure they are connected and in good shape. If all is ok there, probably the pump. I picked up a used one at the local juck yard in good shape for $75.
Thanks for the input, guys! I pulled the line off of the booster, started up, and there is just the barest movement of air pulsing out, no discernable vacuum. Not only that, I can hear the vacuum pump ticking over the sound of the diesel engine. That can't be good
Any way, looks like I will be swapping out the pump. Thanks again for your input- I appreciate it!
