Hey guys...new to the site...seem to be really knowledgeable and helpful so here goes.
My fiance, went out this morning to start up the truck and it would not crank, click or do anything. It had all power accessories inside / radio, fan, lights all that. Just NOTHING when she turned the key...where should I start?? Starter? kinda stumped...just thought I would make sure there is nothing simple known on these trucks before I go all out on finding the problem .
Thanks!
Dave
Will it start if you shift to neutral? if not, loosen the battery cables just enough so that you can wiggle them back & forth a couple times to clean the connections, retighten them & try it. If it stil wont start, try jumping from another battery. If that gets it going connect a voltmeter across the battery & see if you have about 14 volts while idling. If you do get the battery load tested.
Ok, Just Got home and the truck started right up 3x. Then it quit wanting to start again. it just makes a metallic loud Click over at the junction on the passenger firewall. Like under the fusebox or where the what I would guess is the section where the fuseable link is. I can feel it click when trying to start the car. Recommendations please. thanks! The fuses all look ok too
Battery is charged
Sounds like what mine does when the battery terminals get loose or dirty or battery cables corroded (they can corrode from the inside out, too). Takes a lot of current to start an engine, and if the circuit from the battery to the starter (both positive and negative sides) aren't in good shape, it will have a hard time starting.
I will go and clean those..got it to start 10 + more times again. DOH! this is frustrating. But I did narrow down the noise...you know the click you hear just before the starter engages?? that is the click I am getting..but no start. Solenoid maybe on the starter ???
I have no idea how your 93 is wired, but if this has a starter relay that click you are hearing is probably the relay closing on a dead spot & it needs a new one. If this has a starter relay, it will have a red cable from the battery, a black cable from the starter & a small slip fit wire from the ignition switch attached to it.
Any chance its the fuel cut off switch? Explorers have it behind the passenger side footwell outside kickplate. I am unsure if there is a mechanical part of the switch that could loosen to the point it becomes audible--If so then it could have gone bad--There is an inertia activated part of the switch that shuts off the fuel in case the truck is in a bad accident so fuel wont continue to feed the engine.
There is a solenoid on either the firewall or passenger fenderwell. This solenoid goes between the battery and the starter. Make sure those connections are tight. When it won't start, try jumpering from the hot side of the solenoid to the starter. If the starter turns, then the solenoid is bad. IF the starter clicks, then it's a bad starter.
Had same sounding problem. Turned out the starter was it. Pulled the starter and watched for proper operation but it would not engage just spun. Hope all goes well.
Thanks guys..I have pretty much decided its the starter...pulled out the good ol broomstick, had my girl turn the key...nothing...hit the starter with a broomstick...Shazam...it worked. Damn! These starters are REDICULOUS!!! 114 bux!! WTF?? Anyone have a source for a better price on one??
LOHRTBT: you mention a loud metallic noise and that's it. Had the same thing. Replaced starter and worked fine for about a week. Autozone tested starter and found nadda! Open the hood, truck starts. Close the hood, nothing but the clank! Wife noticed when hood was unlatched but not open that a spark was jumping from the batt cable. Bad cables. Replaced cables, problem solved. 27 Bucks for the complete starter harness from the 'Zone.
