1991 E350, 460, Dana 60 Front&rear, 4BY4 Pathfinder Van.
Trans has a hard/delayed(higher RPM'S) from 1-2 and 2-3.
Overdrive takes longer (higher RPM'S) and backing off gas a little helps to shift into OD.
Speedometer fluctuates arratically from 0 MPH to whatever, whenever it wants.
I have a push button OD switch on dash that doesn't flicker on and off like I have read in other threads. Yes' the light bulb is working.
I think there might be a slight shudder.
Would any codes be availble to pull off computer.
There might be a rear speed sensor on your van, i would check to see if it does, and if so, replace that. It sounds like either a TPS sensor or a speedo sensor thats the culprit.
fordman is probably right on the money. It sounds like the speed sensor is bad or has a loose connection. It will have a direct effect on the E4OD tranny shifting.
Thanks for the info.
I'll try the above.
Speed sensor location? (Dana 60 4.10 rear)
How about pulling codes, is it possible.
Before I posted this subject, I thought maybe a E4od was needed. With that said, because Pathfinder is out of business, what years and models would interchange. The spec's that came with the van listed the output shaft as, FORD OEM-no part #, followed by the adapter with a part #. So, the van came stock with 2 wheel drive, does that mean Pathfinder changed the output shaft (seems to me that would be very time consuming for them) to accomodate for the transfer case. I read that the output shaft is different between 2 and 4 wheel drive.
Thanks for your replies guys.
What did I do today?
Had codes pulled, 29 & 33, Speed Sensor & Something EGR (for 2 years always had a high idle, to lazy to trouble shoot). Ford try to ream me $180.00 for new EGR. So I removed and cleaned old one , NO HELP. Found vaccum leak with carb cleaner at hose to PVC valve, replaced and purrs (with Flowmaster) like a kitten.
Installed new speed sensor, Ford Part, no help.
Installed new filter and fluid, no help.
Is there anything else I can do or check, or am I in need for a rebuild? What upgrades (recall kits ?) should I look for. Van's weight is 9,900lbs, I was thinking that a RV shift kit would be a good idea.
The other thing I did was installed 4 new Goodyear Wranglers MT/R LT285-75-16. Ordered from The Tire Rack online, took one day, best price anywhere, $706.00 deliverd. Wife had licenes plate made, reads A-TEAM

Did the new speed sensor fix the speedometer problem? If not the problem with your tranny may still be caused by the problem with your speedometer.I would find that one before I dished out $1200 to $3000 on the E4OD tranny
Problem Fixed
After reading ALOT of threads (speed sensors) I came across one that talked about a electric connection were the speedometer cable connects to transfer case. Went to check connect for corosion, and the cable housing was broke and sticking out about 2''. I guess that is also another speed sensor. Shifts like new and speedometer works fine.
Thanks a millon. (saved alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$)
I have a 93 F250 4x4 with 95,000 miles. The truck was parked for a week. When I got in to drive it - the transmission shifted real hard - both upshifting and downshifting. Transmission seemed real confused. Also noticed that the speedometer was dead. The other gauges work fine (oil, temp, fuel, etc.) - but speedometer and odometer are dead.
I replaced the ABS sensor (Part ABS 211 Niehoff at Schucks) $30 and the speedo works great now, no more ABS light, and all of my transmission problems went away as well. Easy fix, one bolt and slide in the new one. The sensor was on the top of my rear differential.
