i have a 1987 302 bronco i want to put in a 3g alternator but how do i change my wires so i only have 1 and if i get a 3g alternator do i need to change the wires to thicker one's please help need advice soon as possible
Search for the 3G conversion, I and otherts have posted very extensize instructions on how too modify the wiring. If you dont't understand the details, then I'll be happy too go over them with you.
2G alt.
2 plugs, each has 3 wires.
1 plug goes too the rectifier, it has 2 output wires and a sence wire. The output wires is what puts out the power too the battery. Cut this plug completly off, all 3 wires I mean.
2nd plug is a smaller one, it plugs into your regulater, you leave this one alone.
3G alt.
Now take the 2 big wires that go too the solinoid and crimp them both too an eyelet, they will bolt too the output stud on your 3G, The 1 small wire is your sence, crimp on a 1/4" splade terminal, that plugs into the sence on the 3G.
Hope this helps, I'll be back tomorro evening, I'm hitting the hay now.
What, my description not good enough for you?!!!
Fine, I'll get my own fullsize.com, with blackjack and hookers, you know what, forget the hookers, ahh forget the whole thing.
hey broncoroadkill can you talk me through this part

Take the two big wires and crimp them together onto an eyelet that's the same size as the stud on the 3G. Then take the small wire, crimp on a 1/4" spade terminal, and plug that into the sense terminal on the 3G.
ok thanks for all your help guys if i run into any problems along the way i will post a reply hope all my problems get fixed once i put in a 160amp 3g alternator
going with a 160amp alt wouldnt you need to upgrade the wires to a smaller gauge? i believe the stock wires are only good up to 95amps. might concider going to say an 8 gauge wire vs the 16 thats stock.
yea i have heard of that question alot i been thinking about that and in another post someone said that stock wires can handle up to 200amps' can anybody giv a for sure answer its a 1987 302 bronco
the wires are not 16 ga. they are 10ga. and yes they should be fine. It's also refered too as a bigger guage, it's just a lower #.
16ga. is the wire that you find on alarm sytems, and they can't handle anything more than around 6v.
