I have a 98 Explorer 5.0 AWD with a chirp in the left front. When I am almost stopped it turns into a constant squeel and goes away at about 5mph. The chirp is fairly loud and increases with speed upto about 30mph then it is the same from that speed and higher. It does not change when you apply the brakes or lightly swerve the vehicle side to side or accelerate or decelerate. I pulled the LF wheel and the pads are fine, wear indicator is not touching the rotor, there isn't anything between the dust shield and the rotor. I lifted all four wheels and ran it in the air and it made the noise intermittantly and it first sounded like it was in the area of the front u-joint on the front shaft, then it sounded like it was at the inner CV at the diff. ???? Any help or advise would be appreciated. Thank you.
Usually a chirping sound in the front signals a dirty or worn serpentine belt or belt tensioner assembly. Its not a major problem but just get it addressed at your next oil change because the belt powers all electrical accessories in your vehicle. This the only problem that comes to mind with the chirping sound u described. I could be wrong though so make sure you get all the possibilites checked out, not just the serpentine belt. Hope this helps.
Not quite sure of your description !
When your completely stopped is the noise there?
if so there are a couple possible things!
1)belt tensioner
2)belt itself
3)altenator
4) pwr steering pump.
if the noise is only when moving
it could be a inner wheel seal .
they become dry and make this noise
the cvc joint, the outer one has a seal on it that presses up against a metal cup that is pressed in the steering knuckle. What needs to be done is either replace the seal or pull back on the cvc joint and wipe some grease on the cup .
Thanks for the replies. The noise is directly related to the vehicle moving. It is not engine related, belt, pulley, etc. It may be a seal squeeling, it sounds like a typical wear indicator on the brake pads except the wear indicator is still 3 or 4 32nds away from rotor and braking does not change the noise. If it is this inner wheel seal, is it a sign of the wheel bearings/hub going out?
does it go away when you put on the breaks? is it louder on a gravel road? does it do it in 4X4. maybe there's a mouse living in your airbox ha ha a squirel almost bit my hand off once at a junkyard when i opened an air box. ok back to your ex it's probably a bushing either in the control arms or sway bar. lube the hell out of them and see if it goes away.
