another 4x4 question

Hi, one of my buddies just got Ranger and its the XLT, v-6, auto and its a 98-02 did not get all the details. Well since its 4x4 we went out to the desert and tried to engage the 4lo but but nothing happened. This is what we did. Put the truck in neutral, switched the button to 4lo, then we heard a faint click sound. Put it in drive and tried to go in the desert but the front tires hubs would not lock. I looked under the truck while he drove a little and the front drive shaft was turning but the tires we not locked. I know from the old 4x4 with manual hubs you have to back up a bit in order for the hubs to lock but we tried that to and nothing worked. Would this mean he needs new hub locks or some thing like that. We kind of figured the 4x4 was not working when we started to dig a hole in the sand and only the back tires would spin then we had to call for back up . Any info would be great.

Try having your foot on the brake pedal when you select low range 4x4.

Look to see if the front half axels are turning when in 4x4, does it work in 4HI?

I'll check to see if the front half axles are turning, but it does not work in 4hi either.

Sounds like you have automatic locking hubs and one or both are not engaging. There are several posts on this forum about that problem. The general opinion is to remove the auto hubs and go to manuals. If the front shaft is turning, the transfer case is engaged. My guess is the front axles are also turning. If they are not, the the problem is in the front differential.

yeah i did read some post earlier that said to go with manual locks. I also read in some posts that the extended waranty does not fully cover the fix of the hubs and that they do fix it but its a charge of some where about 200. Is this some what tru?

I had a GE Capital extended warranty at the time that I had my automatic hubs replaced with Warn Manuals. The warranty covered the whole thing. The manual hubs are actually much cheaper than the automatics. I think the auto hubs were going to cost $600-$700 per side so I believe they were more than happy to cover the replacement to the manual hubs.
The extended warranty people sure didn't make any money on my truck!

The only repacement hubs for those year rangers is the AVM hub from brazil, and I dont think anyone has tried them yet.
