94 Ranger 4X4 v6 3.0 - Engine runs great and starts fine when engine cool. After running for a while - like to the store - shutting it off for about10 minutes, it will not start. It cranks great, sometimes it will chug for about 10 seconds like it is trying to start but nothing really happens.
Never have a problem when the engine is running - no stalls, no loss of power, no engine warning light. After the engine sits for a while and cools down it will start again.
I think this is DIS?? Something is getting hot & going open. If this was mine i'd hookup my code scanner when it would'nt start & see if I got a crank sensor code or any other code that might explain this. I've heard that this sort of problem can be found by blowing hot air from a hair dryer on different components. Maybe one of the other guys can tell you how to do this.
Hey, thats EXACTLY what happens to my truck after you drive it for a while, it hasent done it lateley because its cold out, but today it started to warm up (35 degrees) and after i drove it 10 miles, went in for 10 min, came back out, started it, and it reved up and down like it was going to die. so i just held the throttle down to about 2000k rpms, and it started to pick up. A few days this past fall when it got warm out (75) i'd crank it, it would fire a little, then die, crank it again with my foot on the gas, and the throttle slowly started picking up, then it took off. It seems like its not running on all cylinders when this happens, like you start it, couple cylinders fire, then a couple more, then finally they all fire. No codes, havent tried it when it was happenening, but when it does i have my chepo code scanner and i'm ready to get it. No warning lights or anything. I think i'm going to check the spark plugs though, i pulled one out after my thermostat went out and it had a little white on it from running hot. Maybe thats the reason, anyone know for sure whethere this could cause it?
OOPS, so this does have a distributor, thanks for that info. 94rangerco the next time it wont start try cooling off the ignition module at the base off the distributor with a wet rag & see if it starts. Could also be the coil going open when it gets hot.
