I have a 88 302 5spd with a 355 rear gear and was thinking of swapping to a 308. Has anybody done this ? Is there any specific year 8.8 to avoid? Is the truck 8.8 unique? OR will a mustang one swap in? Thanks in advance
A 355 rear end is about standard for an F-150 with a 302 engine (many folk would prefer 411s). You might not be pleased with performance after going to 308 gearing since the 302 does not make lots of torque at low speeds.
Changing tire diameter is an easy way to get the same effect as changing rear end gears. Might be worth thinking about.
I don't think it's worth it, the gas mileage will not be that signifigantly different, and the 302 is probably going to feel underpowered with 3.08s, IMO.
Thanks for the info may have to rethink this it was not really a gas millage idea it was more that it seems to be screeming at 60 mph (2100 rpm). It also seems like I have to shift early (going into 5th at 45) but maybe I am not just used to it. ( I just traded an 81 chevy 350 auto for this truck)
I have larger tires on my 89 with a C6 and 3.55 gears and I run close to 3k on the tach will driving around 70mph. Thats screaming to me. I plan on installing a ZF this spring to bring the rpm's down and hopefullt imptove my mileage.
a 302 isn't screaming at 2grand. has any of the factory intake been modified/altered? intake noise can be a problem, as well as other engine/body or some resonance at certain rpm's. my '91 w/e4od is just hitting the 2k mark at 70 mph! very quiet, but of course it's in overdrive, but also have 355 rear. hows your fan clutch? i would strongly recomend checking other sources of noise before tearing into the rear end. that's an expensive job unless you've done it before & want to tackle it. my 2cents worth...pross

The Mazda M5OD has an OD ratio of 0.80:1, the ZF has a 0.76:1. Not much difference in OD ratio, a lot in tranny strength. RTM is currenty running a C6 which has a 1:1 top gear with no OD.
