I hate it when people throw anything out the window - cigarette butts, cans, etc. The plastic soda bottles get a bounce to them - I've had a few hit my vehicle - now that really ticks me off.

I always use ashtrays & dump them in the garbage, but a few years back I had the "pleasure" of going to the state-sponsored dangerous drivers school as required here for anybody who gets a ticket for anything.
They had "breaks" during the day-long class, but there was no smoking on the property, even outside. We asked why that was, they said the owner of the building was afraid people would throw the butts on the ground.
This assumed slovenliness kinda ticked me off, so I started saving up all the butts I could for about 6 months, then drove through there & dumped them in the parking lot.
Just couldn't help myself...

Now the northern part is another story.......
I've always thought that we can blame New Jersey's "reputation" on Camden. Anyone driving from Philly to Atlantic City has to go right through it (or OVER it), and if that ain't the SCARIEST city I've ever seen. Now, Ocean City, Cape May- some of the nicest spots you'll find anywhere.

My brother carries a digital camera with him everywhere. If he's at a stop light and someone throws a cigarette out the window or dumps an ashtray he snaps a picture of the car with license plate and litter in plain view. He's sent quite a few of these into the local police office and they claim they mail tickets and file the pictures as evidence. I'm sure people dispute it but still, kind of funny. $900+ fine here for doing that as we have so many problems with fires.

Ok 1956MarkII, I agree Camden is not the most beautiful city in the state of New Jersey. As a matter of fact, it is probably the most dangerous. BUT.....
If you get 3 miles north, south and east, South Jersey becomes small towns, The venerable Pine Barrens are 20 minutes from Camden. Walk in not knowing where you are going, and they will find you with Jimmy Hoffa! (Maybe)
I apologize to my northern "cousins". North Jersey is probably just as nice.
I guess I'm just tired of the rest of the country dumpin on my home, with out really knowing what they are talking about!!

You can do as I have done. When I catch people tossing their butt out in our parking lot, I point out to them they dropped something. If I cannot get to them personally, I have been known to place the still burning butt on their windshield wiper. We have a smoking ordinance in Pueblo, which at first I was opposed to. I now would support a total ban in public places having watched the vast majority just toss the butt rather than dispose of it properly.

I see it as the smokers responsibility to keep their not so bright cohorts in line, or suffer the consequences of a stricter blanket policy.

butts are one thing, what about when they come out of the store with a new pack, and drop the cellophane wrappers on the ground?

Lazy, incredibly.

This reminded me of a story. My father was taking me to the airport and we were following a truck that had Greenpeace bumper stickers everywhere. They were very active on protecting the environment and while at the light, this person threw out a lit cigarette and took off in a cloud of smoke from a very out of tuned vehicle. This is just proof about how lazy and moronic people can be.

Best Sticker on the smoker was “Don’t trash your mother” (Here’s your sign)

I'm with ya, my friend. I think Hollywood's the one to blame here. They always talk about Jersey like the whole state's a cesspool or something. It's called "The Garden State" for good reason!

That's just gross (but so's using the ashtray in the car).

Honestly, smoker or not, do you *really* want to smell like that? I could never stand to have my car smell like an ashtray

My sister has decided to start smoking. Makes me want to vomit - her car smells like a burning jockstrap.

It smells like cigarettes

Honestly, though - does anybody actually find the odor to be pleasant?

why do these people use and fill up their ashtrays if they are just going to dump them on the ground?
