How do I remove the rear brake rotors? (99 F150, disk all the way round) They don't seem to fall off like the fronts. Had it apart once and just did the pads. That didn't last too long, time to do them again.
I just worked on the rear brakes of our '99 Exp. last week. I'm no pro, but I'm guessing the hardware is similar to your F150. The rotors pulled right off for me. The surprise for me was that there are also brake shoes under the rotor for the emergency brake. Maybe the shoes are holding on to the rotor. Did you have the emergency brake set? (that thought just struck me as I re-read my post) You might try knocking them off with a mallet if you didn't. Just a thought. Hope it helps. Good luck.
If your rears are the same as the F150's, which they probably are, and your rear rotors don't want to come off, take a hammer and whack the you know what out of it. It will break loose. If you decide to use a mallet, good luck. I used both and the hammer works 100 times better at breaking the bond. The mallet will tend to give a bit too much.
You should have some pads under the rotors. These pads sometimes stick to the inside of the disc/drum combo. The hammer will do the trick. Whack it hard, none of this light tapping stuff.
I never thought about the emergency brake shoes, that must be it. I will grab my 2lb or 5lb BFH. By the way, BFH is Big F***ing Hammer or I suppose Big Fat Husband as my wife used to say as she was whacking me.
I like the term. Good luck on the whacking. My ight one came right off. the left one was a different story. I gave it a couple of medium whacks and nothing. Then I whacked it really hard and whala, it came loose right away.
They may also be seized on, common problem with ford trucks! My front ones were seized on and it took us a day of cussing to find a way to get them off, a BFH with PBblaster could NOT do it. We did this on the front. We took the whole hub/rotor assembly off, it isnt but like 3 bolts behind the rotor. We used a sawzaw to cut straight in towards the center on both sides and then a little whack with a hammer broke it loose. I did this because I was replacing rotors anyways! besides they were only $35 a piece. Some tire places can cut them off on the vehicle, but they'll charge you a few hundred bucks to do it.
