The turn signals quit working on my 96 aerostar quit working when I turned the emergency flashers on recently and havent been working since. I figure its the multi function switch. Am I right? Is this common? any suggestions?
The hazard lights and turn signals share many things including the combination switch. However each one uses a different fuse. I'd start with checking the fuse.
Do the hazard lights still work? If so then the flasher unit should be good as well as the bulbs.
I checked the fuse and its okay. the hazards were'nt working before and would stop the turn signals from working if you pushed the hazard switch down, neither working. now niether the hazards or the turn signals are working regardless of the hazard switch position. and they are the only lights not working.
It's not a very complicated circuit. The main parts are the combination switch and the flasher unit. A couple of fuses too. The rest is just the wiring.
I suggest you get a Haynes manual. You can get them at autoparts stores or used on ebay. It's got a diagram of the circuit. I don't have mine with me now.
For turn signal operation it uses a fuse that is hot only with the key on. Pressing the hazard switch, switches to a "hot at all times" fuse. So there are two fuses to check.
The second thing (because it is easier) is the flasher unit. It plugs into the fuse box.
After that look at the combination switch in the steering column. I would get some contact cleaner and spray into the internal working of the switch and work the switchs.
I have the same exact problem. It started just like yours with turning on the emergency flashers. I checked every fuse in the truck, swapped around all the relays and changed the multifunction switch and flasher. Still no turn signals or emergency flashers. If you figure it out I'd sure like to know what it is.
I'll spare you the agonizing long story and just say that after trying out 6 different blinker switches in my 91, and none of them still working. some **** in the back of the wrecking yard says, hey, did ya check the flasher?
it was the flasher, but the tail lights still didnt work! no brake lights, no parking lights.
It did occur to me but I thought nahhhhh. But I'll check them all before I install the $95! switch. Something bad must be happening in those curcuits. electrical power surge or something
It was the multi-function switch. everything works. took apart the old one and it looked like an old coroded penny inside. I suppose I could may have been able to sand the contacts clean but no guarantees so I just put the new one in.
The first thing I did was buy a Haynes and there was a short paragraph about the multi-function switch. All it said was take it to a dealer! The steering column has to be removed to change the switch. I said oh s#$@! BUT! you do not have to do it.just a handfull of trim pieces.
Another thing is if you're replacing used switches with used switches I suggest you take them apart first and clean the contacts. The switches must be vulnerable to corrosion. That IS! what was wrong with my switch. Be careful of little springs flying everywhere.
I agree. I took the combo switch out of my 96 without messing with the steering column. Jut the trim like you.
Glad you were able to tackle this on your own. I still need to get some contact cleaner for my 94. The blinkers/hazard light are fine but the wiper delay is all messed up.
