Question piston ring replacment cost?

OK, here I go, Im going to ask the question ive been dreading the answer to but, does anyone have any idea either the average cost of getting the piston rings replaced or the difficulty in doing it myself? I live in an apartment so space and resources are limited but Im willing to give it a try if its not too terribly difficult. I have a 302 and its blowing out more smoke than I do, not just from the rear but from under the hood as well. I guess if all else fails i could just replace the whole engine if its more cost effective. Also, if anyone has any idea of what the cause might be then PLEASE let me know, but I have a feeling Im right about what the problem is. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

If it's that worn out, then you might need to get the block bored .30" over and new pistons too match.

Re-ringing an engine is generally something that was done in the good old days - nowadays you are basically looking at a rebuilt or replacement motor.

It would cost almost as much to have someone pull the motor and re-ring it than it would to rebuild or replace it. You could re-ring an old motor and have it throw a rod the next week, you'd be out a lot of money for nothing.

If you have the time, the hoist, and the energy, it WOULD be cheap to re-ring it yourself, but if it needed boring then you might as well rebuild it.

If the rings are shot, the heads are worn, main and rod bearings are worn, cam and lifters don't have the lift they once did, you'll need a gasket kit, with all that you might as well through in an oil pump, timing chain and hot tank bath for all of the parts. This is of course if the bore is in reuseability spec, otherwise you will have to get a machine / engine shop to overbore, buy new pistons due to the larger bore and hone to fit.
If you are to the point that the engine is using as much oil as it is gas, the suggestion to replace with a crate motor or a rebuilt is your best (and more than likely cheapest) option (even comes with a warranty)
