Ford 9" FRONT?

Greetings!

I stopped to help a guy on the side of the road who had a beautiful 78 F150 step side. As we talked about his truck, he said it had 9" front and rear axles. The front housing was most definately a dana44, but the PO told him it was a custom made 9". I really didn't want to argue with the guy so I left it alone.

My question is: Is it possible to fit a 9" carrier into a dana 44 or even a dana 60? I've had my D44 and 9" apart several times, and I just can't see it happening.

My guess is that the PO was full of it. He also claimed it had a 460, but I've never seen a 460 look more like a 400 in my life.

I imagine that with enough time and money somebody with considerable fabrication skills and too much time on their hands could figure out how to make some weird hybrid 9"/Dana 44 mix but there would be no practical reason to do it. On another note, you can buy a custom made 9" front axle but obviously this was not the case.

No, the D44, D60 and 9" internals will not interchange. The only 9" front that I've seen is made by Currie, and it's all cu$tom built. Some use 44 outers and shafts and some use 60 outers and shafts(both use the 9" center section). They also have RR 9" front and rears for short wheelbase vehicles. Sounds like the PO of the truck blew a little smoke up the guy's rear to make the sale on the truck. I have looked at trucks before where the person selling had no clue what they really had.

currie makes front axle 9" but if it looked like a d44 then it was a d44. the custon front 9" are quite odd looking. but cool, i have thought about it for my truck becasue d60 are becoming scarce and costly, and the custom 9" is about the same price range.

I'm seriously considering buying a GM dana 60 just to get the outers and do a custom 9" setup. If done right the only custom parts needed would be inner axles. But that's a project for another day.

I would have just told the guy, he'll find out sooner or later.
