I have been reading these threads for awhile, but finally have a question I havn't found an answer to.
I have a 03' Expy 4x4 w/ 5.4L and the towing package (3:73 rear I believe)
I am considering purchasing a Toy Hauler. The UVW will be around 5600lbs and filled w/ up to 2400 lbs cargo/beer/beans/etc.... Thats 8000lbs.
The rating with weight distributing hitch is 8950lbs. Some say only tow up to 75% of rating. I say I will not have this Expy forever and can replace it when needed. Hopefully not for the next 5 years. I will be towing every other weekend up to 2 hours away, and once or twice between 6-12 hours away. Grades will be a factor, but I do not care if I have to drive slow.
A friend has an F150 w/ same setup and pulls 6-7000lbs up grades in 2nd at 4000rpm (50 mph) no problem. He has airbags.
My question is:
Does anyone here tow similiar vehicles or have experience towing with the expy.
Is there suspension upgrade for the rear independent suspension that I should look into.
I know it seems as though this question has been beat to death, but I have only read one post (after using search option) where someone was pulling a Toy Hauler with a Expedition.
There were several boat owners pulling 7000lb boats, but no one with Toy Haulers.
I may be asking too much of my expedition and will study the GCWR when i get home tonight.
Any Toy Hauler owners pulling with an expy please chime in on UVWR and GCVWR.
I'm not sure what you mean by a toy hauler? I have pulled a 24' enclosed trailer with my Road Race car (Camaro) in it. The car weighs 3250, and I never did weigh the trailer, but would imagine that it was around 8K or more total. I also have a 18' flat bed that I tow and wow what a difference. The flat bed I can honestly say that the truck doesn't even know it's back there. I know that's a harsh statement but when compared to the enclosed it really is a night and day difference. There was sometimes with the enclosed trailer while loaded to the hilt that I wasn't sure if I was going to make it up a grade. Not kidding.... Mind you I was doing this with only a load leveling type hitch. My truck doesn't have air bags or anything. The enclosed trailer was on loan to me for the racing season, as an option to buy. I decided not to at this time. If I were to tow a trailer of that caliber I would defintely get something other than my beloved Expy, I hate to say it. The truck fits my needs right now by providing great towing on the weekend with the flat bed and providing great transportation for my wife and multiple kids during the week. Hopefully I answered your question. If not lemme know!
