Not Freighttrain but here's what the colors are for a '68:

Green = right stop & turn signal (same lamp filament is used)
Yellow = left stop & turn signal (ditto)
Brown = left & right rear lights (the other lamp filament)
Black/Red = back-up

The license plate lamp is a tap off the Brown wire.

I used a switch from a 80's truck in my 67' there are a bunch of extra wires but the colors are correct on the wires you need.
also the pins in the plastic wire connectros sometines get pushed too deep into the plastic to make contact. check the connectors first.

Btw,You dont need a steering wheel puller. The steering wheel is pressed onto a tappered shaft. Remove the nuts first then loosen the large nut on the shaft almost off, leaving the nut on prevents mushruming the shaft when you hit it. Have another person pull on the wheel, strike the shaft with a hammer the wheel will pop loose.

Wow, I didn't expect to see this thread again. Oh well.

I havent done anything about it yet. This weekend it should be plenty warm, and I havent got anything else to do. I'll go up to the junkyard then.

I'll let ya know!

If you want the wiring diagram for your truck e-mail me at jeff_koski2002@yahoo.com and I'll try to e-mail you the wiring diagram for your lights. If that doesn't work send me your name and address and I'll mail you a copy of the tail light wiring.

Problems continue with rear lights

I am still encountering problems with the rear lights on my 71 Custom. All of the lights work on the front...can get the tail lights working on the back...and sometimes the turn signals...The backup lights stay up all of the time...according to what I have picked up on the forum...it is like this...yellow and black=lefts stolp and turn signal...green=right stop and turn signal...brown=tail lights, or running lights....I can only find one hot wire at the back where I intend on tying in the tag lights...(new tag lights)...To repeat myself, everything on the from works, including the emergency lights, or flashers....HELP....GOING NUTS HERE....LOL...the old truck has new paint, and is exceptional for its age...would love driving her around town...but the local police frown on not having lights.....Thanks in advance....Nomadic...!

A common problem with older vehicle electrics is not having a good ground. If you remove the screws holding the taillight assembly on each side, you can pull that assembly loose from the bed. You will then see a wire on each side bolted to the bed (Those are your factory ground wires). Remove the bolts and clean the surfaces. Re-install bolts. Solder a new wire to the ground wire on each side and run your new ground wires up to the engine and bolt them to the outside of the engine. Be sure to clean the surface around the bolt hole where you plan to attach your new ground wire. I would also drill a small hole in each of the front turn signal assemblies and bolt a wire to each of them. Attach the other end of those wire to the engine as described above.

I figured it out. The wire going up to the light from the wire bundle going to the back end of the truck was bad. I wired around it and it works great now. Just some simple barrel connectors and I'm done.

So FWIW, watch your wires on these old trucks. 30+ year old wires can and do fail from time to time!

My old truck (71 Ford Custom) was stored inside for 15 plus years..It is in pretty good shape...The lights have been a pain...All of the lights have worked for a period of time since I took interest in the truck again some 2 years ago...Then BANG...they go on the blink...lol..again...! I can hook them all up and the tail lights will work...! and sometimes the turn signals...but when I try to check hot wires with the new tag light that I installed...it shows only one hot wire...(new tag light were used because I put a roll pan on it...All lights in the front work...including the emergency flashers..I am not much of an electrician, but how hard can it be to hook up four wires...lol...It is a mystery to me...guess I can make an orange trailer out of it....Nomadic

The brown wire to the back is the running lights. With lights turned on, it should be the only one HOT. The yellow/green ones are turn signals/brake lights(one is left/the other is for right). The remaining one is back up lights and I can't seem to remember what color it is suppose to be.

Leave all lights off and turn on ONE signal and go to back with test light. This will show what wire is for that side. If you use a volt meter, it may not react quick enough to show(especially a digital one). A test light will work great, get one with a poker type end so you can ***** the wire thru the insulation if you want. Do the other turn signal the same way. Then leave everything off and put truck in reverse with key to "RUN" position. This will show the last wire.

If power to the rear is iratic on all wires, then I would start checking up front. The wiring harness coming out of the firewall should have a plug on it. My '69 was a permanent harness, but I think the newer models are plug in style at the firewall. I would pull the plug and clean the connections really good. Make sure it fits tight. I would also do your testing at the point also to make sure you have power to that point. That would confirm the plug is the culprit, causing iratic operation out back.

Good luck
Larry
