Don't have the 3rd Gen X, but I have the 2nd Gen X (1999) with AWD. Being that I only do city driving it's great. Never have to worry about shifting in & out of 4WD.
Draw backs are you have no low gear for extreme off-roading and the fact that it is an AWD will wear on the hubs more than a typical 4WD.
They each have their goods and bads. My father has a 2003 X with the 4WD, and he seems to like it. Sorry, haven't driven the 3rd Gen X AWD yet, but the 2nd Gen X AWD are great.
My father's '03 AWD X works good. He lives in the country and they get to the gravel roads when it snows last. His only complaint is that he gets stuck because he has no clearance. He has never not been able to get unstuck by himself though.
