My 97 PSD does not want to start in the cold if it is not plugged in. If I leave it plugged in it starts right up, no problem, regardless of how cold it is. I get tons of white smoke and it takes me about 10-20 minutes to get it started if not plugged in.
Is this indicative of a glow plug problem? If so, do they all need to be replaced? The truck has about 125K miles on it.
The Glow Plug Relay is notorious for failing on these trucks. Check for power at the large terminal on the rear of the relay first with the key on. The relay cycles for 2 minutes then shuts off. If you have an amp-meter, check the anount of amps in the wire comint off the rear terminal, should start at 200 amps then gradually go down to about 90. You can check the pugs by disconnecting the harnesses at the valve covers and checking ohms through the two end pins in each connector going through the valve cover gasket. should be no more than 2 ohms.
From personal experience, I'd start with the relay, it's also the easiest to replace.
Good luck!
FordPowerStroke, I have a couple of MS Word documents folks seem to find helpful that I can forward to you. This site does not show eMail addresses, does not allow posting eMail addresses in the forums and I cannot send an attachment through the site. I have sent an eMail to you through this site, if you will reply to it I will reply to you with the attachments. They go into glow plug relay function and testing, glow plug testing and replacement.
George, I have sent you an eMail, see post just before yours. Please reply to mine and be sure to include this site and the information you want and please put glow plug info or some such in the subject header. I will reply to your eMail.
I have a 99 7.3 that thinks 30 degree's is to cold to work. Could you please send me those word doc also. Thanks
I'm a new owner and have a lot to learn about these machines.

Pwrstk99, you got mail. The information I have is specific to the 94-97 trucks. There are some differences (you have one plug per valve cover gasket and I have two, glow plug relay placement is slightly different, some of the newer trucks have intake air heaters and so on) but the principles are the same. If you will reply to my eMail to you I will then reply with the attachments.
