I put a used (under 2K miles) auburn pro series in my 8.8 about 6K ago. it worked pretty good but the slop in it was starting to grow. the last week it started working great it would spin them both no matter what i was on but the slop in the pinion gears had not improved. i was comming home with a load of stone yesterday and i heard this pop. i was on back roads and everytime i would start from a stop one wheel would spin on the ice and the other wouldnt it would just make a horrible sound like gears jumping. well i managed to limp home in 4x4. When i tore it apart i found that one of the spring retainers had broke allowing all of the pressure to be applied to one side gearwhich in turn wore out the clutch on that side and allowed the pinion gears to jump over the teeth on that side gear. luckilly i had an extra carrier laying around and figured id put it in and go ahead and swap to 3.55's while i was at it. while the normal 30min job of removing the carrier turned into 2 hours. first i got stuck in my drive way because all i had was front wheel drive. then the bolt holding in the cross shaft was sheared off but that was no big deal because the pinion gears had gauled on the shaft and spun it so it was loose in the carrier but i could not get the cross shaft driven out of the gears. so after 10 min of beating on it i said screw it and got out the hot wrench. after another 10 min of burning the center out of the shaft and putting the fires out i was finally able to remove the c clips and axle shafts. from there on out it wasnt bad but now im stuck with ope carriers fron and back so i know the next time im in the ditch ill be screwed because i wont have a wheel spinning on the road just in the ditch. if anyone has a detroit ez locker or lock right or something like that will fit in place of the spiders for the 8.8 i might be interested
