O-Ring or gasket?

I have developed a coolant leak where the water pump attaches to the block. Looks like the pump has been changed out not too awful long ago. What's weird is I can't see a sign of a gasget sticking out around the perimeter of the pump housing as you would expect. Was wondering if maybe these things are sealed with an o-ring?....

Yes, it is an O-ring. There is a groove in the waterpump housing that it fits into. Sometimes it can slip during installation and get pinched. I put a few dabs of RTV silicone at various spot in the groove to help keep the O- ring in place when installing the pump.

Some 7.3l DIT vehicles may exhibit a coolant leak at the water pump inlet elbow joint. This may be due to distortion of the inlet flange or the oring seal being cut or sheared due to improper seating. A new design water pump inlet was implemented in production on April 7,1997. The new inlet has a more robust flange area & utilizes a new "D" style oring to prevent rolling and provide proper sealing.
