Too much Oil??

when I bought my truck, 1966 f250 240 I6, it had roughly 1qt too much, I figured it burned a little. well it doesnt I have had it for 4 months now and it doesnt burn a lick of oil. my question is that I have heard that with too much oil you can blow out your rear main seal. is this true or an old farmers tale?

I would imagine they tell you Crank Case Fill Limit for a reason....Two Pounds Sand in a One Pound Sack comes to mind, I'd drain and refill to the correct level....

The oil filter holds about 3/4 of a quart, just replace it and don't add any oil.

You bought an used truck. The FIRST thing to do was to change the oil, no matter what the previous owner says.

Now, go out and drain all that oil out, not just the extra and put new in, according to specs, and a new filter. And grease every zerk and check all the other levels too.

Never trust someone elses maintainence skills. Ever.

I know I know, Every vehicle I have owned thats the first thing I do. I slacked on this one because it was cold and is cold and the oil was still clear on the dipstick so I knew it was fresh oil. Im sorry I was a bad vehicle buyer. do you know what the fill is with filter on a 66' 240? im guessing 5.

5 quarts is correct. I didn't mean to sound nasty. I was aiming more at the suggestion that you should drain some oil out or just change the filter.

How does the oil look? Little thin? Smell gas? The fuel pump can leak into the oil on a 240 (and a lot of other engines too). If there is any question, replace it. Its a $20 item at Advance Auto, and its very easy to swap.

I didnt take it as being nasty, its all good. and actually the oil does seem thin, but doesnt really smell like gas. That had crossed my mind that maybe the carb was dumping to much gas in and going into the pan, but the pump makes more sense. since the plugs dont foul. thanks for the tip.

oh and that might also explain my horrific fuel mileage. 10mpg. I just figured it was my 2 bbl modification.

A lot of these old trucks get about 10, though I think that you can do better. But in and of itself, it doesn't prove that you are losing gas into the oil. But as I said above -- fuel pumps are cheap these days, and if the old one looks well "old", then replace it.

You sure it has the right dipstick in it?

No, it won't blow out the seal. But it's not a good thing if the oil level is too high it can be whipped around in the crankcase by the spinning journals.
