I recently purchased a superchips 1715 off of e-bay. I did not know that the tuner vin locked until i read the manual. I havent tried to use it yet. I am wondering if anyone knows what will happen? Will it just not allow me to set a new program or will it set the new program but not read my stock program? Did I get ripped off?
If the tuner was used before and NOT reset it is unusable on another truck. It could have been used and then reset back to factory specs - then it can be used on another truck. The tuner will only work on one truck at a time.
Hook it up to your truck and see if it allows you to tune. If it comes up as tuner is vin locked you got ripped off and I would get in contact with the seller to get it returned. Superchips will not touch it since you bought it off e-bay and not through a authorized retailer. There are authorized retailers on e-bay though.
If it allows you to tune then it is fine, you just won't get the support for superchips in case you want to upgrade to a newer program.
Echo the above. Also be advised that not only will Superchips not update it/support it if bought through eBay, they only warranty tuners to the original buyer (they will ask for proof) and then only if purchased through a legit source.
Plug it in, it'll let you know if it's locked and will not program another vehicle.
I tried to plug it in today. It did not say it was vin locked however it would give an error message each time i tried to load a program.
The message was: Error - Check connections!
Im pretty sure i had it hooked up right and had all the correct fuses pulled. Does that message make any sense to anyone?
The 1715 connecter is a very "tight fit" with the OBD II port. This is well documented. Just make sure the "pins" are lined up and don't be afraid to push them together "real good".
