on the way home from work today my oil pressure fell to nothing! it had oil. i have 87 4x4 with 300. can pump be changed wiyhout pulling motor? any info appreciated.
i'm not 100% sure but i think you can wrestle the pan off on that motor usually you can remove the motor mounts and lift the motor enough. first check to see if the wire fell off the sending unit or hook up a mechanical gage so you don't waste a weekend covered in oil and grease.
tanks for the info. tried to drive it home today as soon as the engine warmed up it bottomed again.i made about 3 miles of a 10 mile trip. its old and not beutiful but i would not trade my 300 with 4-speed & granny 1st gear for any new one. 300s forever man!!!!!!!!!!!!!
jigman, did this start all at once? I'm thinking you may have a plugged oil filter, as a poster on here the other day had. Granted a very badly worn oil pump would cause what you're describing, but it would come on gradually. It could also be very badly worn bearings, but that would also come on slowly. Explain to us how your oil pressure was more recently before your pickup became completely disabled. Just trying to save you unnecessary work and expense.
it recently developed a dry knock when cold but only for a few seconds.i shut it down imediately when i saw it was 0.didnt have to walk luckily.i did not need to be replacing an engine.i could look down into the oil filler neck and see the #1 rocker arm it had some oil on it .i revved it little to see if it increased but it didnt the best i could tell.im the 3rd owner it has 219000 miles with 1 rebuild dont know for sure when.i have driven it for 3 years this the first internal engine problem ive had with iy.2500 is all i gave for it !in good shape.
It Definitely could be the Main Bearings. I 've got an 88 f150 302, and an 85 f250 302 both with oil pressure problems. Have replaced both guages with mechanical ones and got hardly any pressure in either motor, so I sprung for an oil pump for the 85 and saw very little change, Someone in the 80-86 Forum is having the same problems with these Fords. Seems as if Ford had some problems in the L6 and v8's with MAIN BEARING clearances. So it probably is the bearings.
i started trying to got that darn pan off this afternoon.what a pain in the butt!the egr valve hit the wiper motor and the motor will not lift up high enough to slide it out.got to take one or the other off aND CROSS MY FINGERS.i got aggravated and walked away for the evening pick up tomorow. i also hooked up a mechanical gauge once warm the op fell off.get this, idleing it held ok 10 to 15 lbs when i revved it up it went to 0! explain that crap!!!!!

Yep, it will do that... I pulled the wiper motor, and lifted the engine till the egr hit the firewall. That gave me just enough clearance to get the pan off, but it was tight.
finally got that thing off. bottom end looked good/there were no metal particles in the pan.ordered new melling high volume pump and screen wont be in till tomorrow.will update on progress.thanks for info.
finally got that friggin thing back on .pressure is great revved it holds about 55psi. thats what im talkin about! ol green ford rides again!it aint fast but it will pull a stump out of the ground.thanks for all the help guys.
