I have 1993 Explorer V6 4L, my water temp gauge never goes up to the normal part of the gauge, it only makes it to just above the cold line. The truck blows great heat, and I think its warming up correctly, but the gauge doesn't show it. I've replaced the thermostat twice, the guage it self once, and what I believe to be the water temp sending unit twice, with no change. The reason I say "what I believe" is because thats what the part store told me. The sensor they gave me is the one thats brass in colour and on the top of the thermostat housing. When its disconnected indeed may gauge doesn't work, but am I missing something, or looking at the wrong thing.?? Please Help...
If it were me, here's what I'd do. I would check the output of the dash gauge against the output of the computer's coolant temperature sensor (I'm pretty sure the '93's still had separate dash and computer coolant temperature senders). A wiring diagram and a voltmeter is all you would need. Then you'd know if the dash gauge was giving you faulty information, or if that's just where "normal" was with that sending unit.
I know you said you replaced the thermostat, but are you using the correct temperature therm? You should be using either a 192 or 195 degree thermostat.
My '92 Sport typically runs on the cooler side of the coolant temperature gauge. It normally runs between the letter's 'N' and 'O' , but may drift lower. I can tell that the thermostat is cycling, because when the car first warms up, the temperature will get up to around 'M' or 'A' and then quickly drop down when the thermostat first cycles open. As far as I know, the only drawback to a lower coolant temperature is slightly poorer fuel economy, while the benefit of lower temperature is an engine and transmission that runs cooler, and thus less likely to damage lubricants and seals, which should improve the longevity of your engine and tranny.
I had the same problem as you Keno-Man but only in the winter in the summer the temp would go up half way and stay there, and last winter did not have time to do the t-stat the heat would come out warm but not hot enough on cold mornings it would take forever before i could put the fan speed to low or 2 or 3, this winter replaced the t-stat with auto zone 195, i did have the motor craft 192 in before, i thought it worked fine i was running between the n and o but at idle for a long time it would jump to half then go down to the first cold line then sometimes it would just stay on the cold line returned it for the warrenty same thing happend went with the stant and so far so good, runs between the n and o occasionaly to the r but i think the old explorers just run a little cold in the winter so if the t-stat gets a little lazy you really notice it, seeing you replaced everything else i would switch brands and make sure its a 195
