Does anyone know of any limited slip diffs availible for my front axle? I was pulling out of a campground towing my loaded 28' sport utility travel trailer up a long small grade on wet ground when I lost traction. I then put it in four low and almost made it to the top when I broke traction again and proceeded to slide sideways into a tree. I ended up having to spend an hour backing down between trees to level ground, then had to cut thru vacant sites ( slightly less grade, more grass ) to get out. I am not sure if a limited slip in front would of made the difference. What do you think ? The LS in the rear worked ok except when I really needed it. I only had one tire in front and one tire in the rear spining when I struck the tree. Sorry for the long post. Any ideas? Thanks
spending money on the front would be ill advised until you fix the rear.
some of your options are....
- change the oil in the diff and put the correct amount of additive (ford apparently does not get this right at the factory)
- replace the factory LSD with a aftermarket LSD
- replace the factory LSD with a locker
- may want to try a set of tires that will give you a better grip
also.... carrying snow chains with you is always a great way to gain extra traction.
It looks like you already have good tires, so I agree with Abendx that you should get the rear limited slip working properly. I changed my rear gear oil to Amsoil and now my limited slip works great.

How do I get the above link to show as a hyperlink? I've tried about 6 different ways.
Thanks for the advice. I am leaning towards aftermarket lockers, from everything I've read it seem the limited slip even when working properly is limited. I think the ARB air lockers make the most sense but are expensive. I wonder if a detroit in the rear would cause problems while towing my travel trailer. Would appreciate any ideas
Will changing the diff oil make that much of a difference? It'd be great to find an easy fix because I almost got stuck in some mud at a job site the other day. I cursed those tires all day but now I wonder. Thanks for the info.
