common years

While still livingi n the 70s in terms of Ford Trucks, I am thinking of getting a "newer" 4x4 as well. got my eyes on a 90 302

Question is how many years did this truck run in production? Do they give much trouble?

Thanks

That style of truck ran from 87-91..and then they changed the body style in 92-96. The main parts like tranny and engine/axle didn't change, but there were refinements on the interior done too. It wasn't a total re-design, but a good upgrade. Take a look at the gallery..arrange them by year..and then look through some pictures if you would like.

1980-1996 was the same basic truck. The Dana 44 TTB front axle was common to all years. I dont know what year they switched from a 9 inch to 8.8 rear axle, both good. Fuel injection came along in the late 1980's. The main thing I would worry about on a 1990 4x4 is the E4OD automatic transmission. Push button transfer cases also had some problems.

The only thing common between a 80-86 and 87-96 truck is the frame and front TTB suspension design, other then that they are pretty much completely different. The brakes were changed in 87-88 to a bolt on caliper. The d44 was the front axle in the front from 80-96, but had a 9" out back until 87 when it went to the 8.8. The 88+ was all EFI, in 87 EFI was an option, and 86 and lower was all carb.

The comment on 86 and older being carbureted only is wrong. Many of the F150's in 86 had fuel injection. I know of several 86 F150's in town with fuel injection. Just adding what I know...

And a comment, the 80-96 trucks are well built machines. They all have some very minor weak points, but plenty of strong points. My family has owned everything from an 80 to a 98 F150 (new body style) and they have all been tough as nails. Some were bought used/abused and they still kept going.

Main point is, don't be afraid of them, they are good trucks.
