The hydraulic clutch on my 1985 4X4 F250 with 460 engine and 4 speed transmission occasionally does not work. The clutch releases fine most of the time but one time out of about 25 the pedal will go to the floor and stay there. I pull the pedal back up, slowly pump the pedal about halfway down a couple of times and all is well again. I've checked the linkage under the dash and all seems well. There seems to be a slight seep at the master cylinder where the line enters. I wonder if air is entering the master cylinder at the line/master cylinder junction. I've never had one of these apart. The parts guy at Ford says these can't be repaired and the master cylinder and slave cylinder must be purchased as a set at "big bucks". I would appreciate any suggestions as to what my problem might be and how to fix it. Thanks
Replacement of the master and slave as a unit seems to be the way to go. I haven't priced it out but if I had to, I would seek out an independant supplier rather than the Ford dealer. Probably be a big difference in price.
I replaced the master on my 86 F150, NP435. I was able to get the master only, I didn't need to replace the slave. The master was leaking fluid through the plunger back into the cab. At first I thought it was the brake master cylinder. I then assumed it was the clutch master cylinder when the clutch wouldn't disengage and the brakes still worked....
I also noticed that the cap of the clutch master cylinder collected water. Inside of the cap of mine there is a rubber gasket, looks like a small dixie cup. In any case there is a small pinhole vent in the cap for the clutch master cylinder. The hood weatherstrip at the cowl was leaking in that area and after heavy rain, water seeped in through the cap and filled the gasket. Anyone ever have this problem??
Thanks. My engine cmpartment gets water in it from hard rains. Water stands in my air cleaner. I'll check to see if water is getting into the master cylinder as well.
I put a new clutch master cylinder on a week ago and so far it is working OK. It is interesting to note that when I asked for a master cyliner for the clutch the guy at the auto parts store said they did not carry them. However, when I asked for a clutch master cylinder he not only found a listing but had one in stock!
glad ya got it working. I think most parts guys are under qualified. If it dont bite them they dont no anything about it. I got a master cylinder nad slave cylinder from autozone for my truck. wich i think would fit on yar truck. Cousre i had to argue with the parts guy that yes there is a master cylinder for the clucth and once he let me run the computer for him i had the rite part in a few seconds and they even had one in stock.
