My fuel gauge on my 72 doesnt work and hasnt since i got it. i looked on the tank and seen the ground had been snatched out of the screw, i hooked the wire back up but it still isnt working. the needle goes up to e and sits there. the red wire is going into the tank and ground is hooked up, what else is there to check??

If you are getting power at the tank, then probably sending unit.

Pull the sending unit from the tank and check your float. My 69 gave me fits years ago; the problem was the float which had a pin hole in it so it would fill with fuel and stay on the bottom of the tank always reading empty on the dash gauge - new float cured it.

Yeah, floats are like $3-$4 here in AZ. I had the same problem.

Pull the main wire of the unit and ground it, if it (the gauge) goes to full then you have a bad unit or a bad float, if it doesnt do any thing (on the gauge) then you have a bad gauge or wire. Hope that helps.
