The bottom bolt on my starter has mysteriously broken loose from the starter, making the starter not be tight against the transmission. The truck won't start, makes a click click click noise. Could the starter being loose cause this truck not to start. Also, what size bolts, head size and length of bolt, do i need to put a new one in. Thanks.
(P.s. THis may not be a starter, considering i accidentally left my lights on for an hour the other night after i parked it.)
Starter bolts are normally 3/8" course thread 1 1/2" long 1/2" wrench size. Hardware store bolt will have 9/16 wrench size. If starter is loose it will not have very good ground.
I think you hit the nail on the head there. If you don't have a good ground then that could be why you are hearing the clicking. It is your starter relay on your passenger's side fenderwall. Or, your battery could be dead from the lights being left on and that is why you hear the clicking: not enough juice to start the truck but enough to make the relay click.
thats what i was thinking at first. The rest of the truck has power. Radio, lights, interior lights, etc. Im guessing bad pot holes here in PA caused the bottom bolt that holds the starter to the tranny loose, cause the starter is very very loose. Makes a lot of sense about the ground. Once again, you guys come to the rescue. Thanks.
When you put a new bolt on, use a lock washer. It will help hold the bolt in. Also, put some anti-seize on the bolt before you thread it in. You will thank me next time you have to change the starter. I have taken many starter bolts out that have been very hard to get out. The anti-seize will help....trust me!
