I just picked up a 1979 F250 4x4 351(don't know which 351)
Is there a way to find out what 351 is in there? It feels like it's got no low end torque.... although I don't know the gear ratio and there are 265/75/16 tires on it...
Completely new to trucks, been wanting one for a while!!
Ford realy did not offer different versions of the 351m they were all 2 barrels and were never really known for there loads of power. A compresion test on all the cycliders and a good tune up may be in order.
Good luck with the new truck
To verify which 351 you have, count the valve cover bolts and notice where the upper rad hose attaches to motor - block or intake, horizontal or vertical?
I believe the 351M/400 has 8 valve cover bolts and the rad hose mounts to the block. The 351 W has 6 valve cover bolts and the rad hose mounts to the intake.
The 351s and 400s are traditionally "soggy" engines due to their low compression ratio. They can be made snappier if built right. It wont be a 351 C, and likely not a W
