well this has been going on for a while now but im begining to wonder...im pretty sure my truck has some pretty bad blow by. when u lift the hood u can see an oily mix coming out of the valve cover breather and its really bad after i come home or go back to school (60+ miles on the interstate doin 75-80). is there anyway to stop or at least prevent this. i know about switching to a thicker weight oil but its winter and pretty cold yet so im gunna stick w/ 10W30 until it warms up. also how long can i expect my engine to live with this blow by? could it be just worn valve guides?
Worn valve guides will not do it... Blowby can only come from one place ... The cylinders.. And only one way to cure it...Bore the cylinders and install new rings and pistons..
Are you sure your PCV system is working properly??
Do you remember this thread??
You asked about blowby in your truck in March of 2002. Most of the answers you get will be the same ones..Have you changed the oil yet?
You cannot buy a cure for blowby in a can at your local auto parts store.
Some people (Me included) believe that adding performance parts to a USED engine will rapidly accelerate wear to the remaining stock parts.. Do a valve job on an engine with 100,000 miles and see how long the bottom end lasts. Add a cam to an engine with 100,000 miles and your asking for trouble.
a 300 like a 302 was born with blowby.it will never hurt them.i,ve seen these engines go 100,ooo miles after it started.it,s worse in the winter.pull your pcv valve out and put your finger over the end to see if it,s working.
Are you saying that the 300 and 302 are BORN with blowby>>
That will get some interesting replies.
I have ZERO blowby on my 1989 4.9 liter. I guess that since it has no blowby there is something wrong with MY truck?????
A finger over the PCV valve is not the way to test it..If it is 1.5-2 Years old REPLACE it..They are only $2.00 each.
They are a maintainence item that should be changed every 12,000 miles..Thats every 3RD oil change...
I would bet it hasn't been changed in years...LOL

""ftwfred- what's up man? You seem to be really aggrivated lately...""
I guess I get aggrivated at some of these ridicoulus threads..
He has been fighting blowby since the 11th month of 2003..
You can ask about it a hundred times and get the same response every time. These threads are as aggrivating as the "Need more power" threads that constantly pop in here.
I didn't say he had to park the truck, or that it wouldn't run any longer.
I just layed out the FACTS, PISTONS, RINGS, And Boring the cylinders are the ONLY way to get rid of the blowby.
Some people ignore the answers they get about problems with thier trucks and continue to pursue Aftermarket intakes, Cams and other High Performance parts even though thier vehicle has SERIOUS issues......
Sorry if I offended anyone...
Sometime the FACTS really are very harsh..
wow im so sorry im not perfect like urself. i guess if i was u id know everything and anything about engines huh. get off ur high throne there buddy and get a reality check. if these threads annoy u so much then dont bother reading them. after all its a public message board and if someone wants to post a question from time to time then they should be able to. maybe u didnt take my original questions into consideration, eh? im just askin what i can do to slow down the blow by, i know it cant just be cured with a wave of a wand, im not completly stupid. im sure theres soemthing i can do besides switching to a heaiver weight oil, possible changing out the PCV more often? and i was also curious how long i my engine will last (estimated) in this condition.
i also guess someone can modify their engine unless they rebuild it? what if someone, like myself has a lower milage engine and doesnt have the $$ for a complete rebuild? my truck had just about 85K when i did the cam swap and was in tip top shape.
PISTONS, RINGS AND BORING THE CYLINDERS....
Thicker oil will not help.
Replaceing the PCV valve everyday will not help.
Your ONLY question is how long it will last.
I (OR anyone else) Cannot answer that one.My crystal ball is in the shop!!! LMAO
Below is the posting you used to start this thread
Didn't ask how to slow the blowby at all, Now did you??
LMAO
Your truck engine is SHOT, So sorry if the FACTS bother you..
85,000 when you installed the cam and now it is SHOT!!!
Can't you figure that one out!!!!!! LMFAO
Good Luck

Well... I hate to get into this one but... here goes. I have a 95 F-250 4.9L that has pretty bad blow by too. Has for 3 years now. Does great if you drive it easy... but 75+ on the interstate or if I pull anything I get the blow by, I can hear it chugging, almost sounds like an exhaust leak now. Anyway... if you plan to re-build the thing eventually then just drive it. Mine started it about 3 years ago, and it's gotten worse, but not terminal. If I pull a heavy load very far I end up having to change the valve cover gasket because it will blow out in the back and cause a pretty bad oil leak. Other than that it's fine though...I just drive it. I've put 2 gaskets on so far, by the time I get all my stuff moved to TX I'll be due another... but it's held in there for almost 40K miles so far and until it becomes a terminal issue I'll just keep putting oil in it. The EFI is a pain to remove to get to the cover... but I'm getting pretty good at it really.
Truth be known that engine has outlasted the transmission, radio, headlight switch, and a host of bearing, bushing, and break parts.... I think it's done well, it has almost 175k on it. I figure if it will hang in there to the 200K mark I'll go ahead and re-build it, but it started the blow-by at probably 130K... so you've probably got plenty of miles left in that engine if you take care of it. FTWFRED is right though... I haven't found anything that will slow it down any other than just keeping my foot out of it. I've got ring problems on the two back cylinders... compression is a little low on them and it leaks off fast. No way to fix that but a re-build.
Originally posted by 312 i hear ftwfred, sengine has less than 10.ooo miles on it.just drives it to church on sunday.no wonder it has no blowby.
Where did ya hear that??
It's only 4500 miles and we take a mule to church...
There is none because I know how to do maintainence on a truck...You know, Change the oil after your stupid enough to go bumper deep in a puddle. Install a PCV valve every now and then LOL
Yer spellin is as bad as somewun else who posts here
and the cut downs still continue. do u really think ur gunna accomplish by raggin on me? i didnt ask for ur help specifically and to be honest i dont want it. i've talked to some of my teachers and they have told me to keep an eye on the oil consumption and to switch to a heavier weight oil to slow it down. i do all the matience my truck needs when i have time/space to do it. at that time i didnt have the time or space to change the oil so i had to leave it go. now what the previous owner did, i have no idea. im not even sure if this blow by problem was my fault or not (truck wasnt in the best shape when i purchased it). and im sorry if i use my truck other then driving around town or to work, mine serves multiple purposes such as my daily driver, weekend wheeler, etc...oh and if the spelling comment is aimed towards me, ur not gunna get anywhere nit picking at others, if u have nothing to say then keep ur 2 cents outta it.
Not ragging on you personally, I said I was sorry if I offended anyone in an earlier post (If you missed it )
Yes, Pour thick oil in it and keep an eye on the consumption rate.
It could last you another 10 years
