I've had some persistant problems with cold starting my 2001 PSD F250 4x4, automatic.
I've already had to replace the glow plug relay twice and when I ask WHY? i get no answers. I'm about 13,000 from the end of my warrantee and I'd like it fixed once and for all.
Am I doing something that's causing this? Is it a serious problem that they don't want to deal with at the "deal"ership?
INQUIRING MIND WANTS TO KNOW!
I have to plug it in every night if it gets down to freezing or it takes lots of tries and white smoke before it starts.
one thing that might help is to cycle your glow plugs twice before starting,IE turn switch let light go out then turn switch again. then crank it over. also you might have your batteries checked. if there ford bat. there is a green eye on the top of the battery. if both batteries are good eye should be green if not green bat. is bad if one is bad replace both other will go out soon after.you also might to use fuel additive in cold weather, your fuel may be gelling if the weather is getting really cold. if it is not any of those I would try another dealership. I had 2000 7.3 never had one problem starting in cold weather, never pluged in till got down below 15. it would start right up every time.
Excessive Glow Plug Relay Failure and Cold Start Problem with 7.3 Power Stroke
I have the same problem with my 1999 F350. The truck currently has 58,000 miles and I have replaced the glow plug relay 3 times (the third time just last month) and it still doesn't start the way it should in cool weather. On Monday of this week it took four tries to start it and it was only 33 degrees. I run antigeling octane booster fuel additive with every tank. I've had this problem since it was new in 1998. The first warrantee work done on this truck was evaluation of the glow plug controler and replacement of the glow plug relay. I've had other powerstroke diesels that dont' have this issue so I'm sure something isn't quite right with this one. Anyone else having or have resolved this issue?

Ditto for what tn_mac posted, but also what oil are you using? Check the oil level and make sure it is the right API CI-4 certified oil. The fuel should be from a good source. Also try the fuel additive. Stanadyne Performance Formula is a good bet. From there, a number of components could be at fault.
Try another dealer. Ask to see the diesel tech's certification and make sure the person working on it is diesel certified. Ask how long the diesel tech has been working on Ford (International) diesels.
