I own a 99 Expy, and am selling it. I have an customer who is interested but needs a 3rd seat, which mine doesn't have. I have called a few dealers and the have quoted me"parts" for the seat adding up to $1500.00. I also have called an auto recycler who quoted $600.00 for the 3rd seat.
Question: can the 3rd seat be installed "safely" in my Expy that
hasn't been factory installed. what needs to be done.
My 3rd seat is installed/removed via connections between the seats 4 mounting points and 4 cavities located on the floorboard in the rear of the truck. When I remove it, I pull up on a bar on from the rear of the seat and it releases the 2 rear connection points allowing me to pivot the whole seat forward on the 2 forward connection points. Once the seat is pivoted forward, the 2 seat connection points on the front have "tangs" with openings which allow me to pull the seat out of the two forward mounting locations and just remove it (by brute strength!). It's not easy for a smaller person because the seat is pretty heavy but I don't have much of a problem seeing I'm a big guy. If your truck did not come with the 3rd seat the carpeting probably covers over these 4 cavities which house the mounting locations. I would assume they are there but just covered over.
If you want factory. its gonna cost!! The rear floor pan is different. Which means "engineering" an anchor system, (which is unsafe and probally illegal) or removing pan and installing one from a wrecked expy. Not an easy bolt on.
This company offers aftermarket seats for all types suv's. I bought one about three years ago for my wife's '95 explorer limited, and it works great. Now in an explorer, it was rear facing and not well suited for big kids, but it worked, and they matched the interior seat color and apperance exactly.
