Comparing Power Stroke by year
I am presently looking to buy my first heavy/super duty truck. My research has brought me to decide on a used ford F350 with the power stroke turbo diesel. There are many offerrings in my area that span many years (94 - 02) that catch my eye. I have searched the web but have not found a good discussion on how the 7.3L turbo diesel may have evolved over the years and whether any particular year had troubles. If anyone knows of an internet resource on this information I would be greatful.

Arguably the best PSD year is 97 as far as mod friendly. They had the strongest block, forged rods, single shot injectors, electric fuel pump. Stay away from PSD's made after Oct. 15 2000 as they have powdered metal rods. These PMR are much weaker then the forged rods of 94.5- early 2000. 99+ are intercooled and have more h/p then nonintercooled versions. 99+ use a 4R100 trans which is essentially a E4OD with all the updates and a better torque converter. E4OD can be made to be a very strong trans, the latter the better. Manual trannies are the strong ZF trannies but the dual mass flywheel can go out. This is a start on comparing them. Thanks for the reply. I'm going to look at a 2000 4x4 duallie today. Carfax said it was deliverd on 1/17/2000 so it was nice to know about the older rods. That web site was good too!
