I posted a question on the 'Bodyworks' forum last night (12 hrs. ago) and got 'nary' a reply!!? They just aren't as helpful over there I guess!
I'm having my truck lettered on Tuesday next week but before it goes in I need to remove the '4x4' decal located on each side of the bed. It's been a while since I've done this but I believe I used a hair dryer. Is there another easier, quicker method? Thank goodness they aren't very large! Best solvent to remove 'goo'?
Your reply(s) are greatly appreciated...

We spend two years teachin' 'em how to walk n talk, and another sixteen gettin' 'em to sit down and hush!
I use my truck for work (but not as much work as you - 3000# of sod!), and had it lettered up. I used a gentle touch and a heat gun to get the 4x4 stickers off. A 500W halogen light will work too as will a hair dryer. Just be careful (obviously).
I used "Goo Gone" but I think any product of this type will work. Goof Off, Goo Gone...that kind of stuff. I got it all cleaned up and washed the truck afterwards. I then put on a coat of wax, which in retrospect may not have been good for getting the decals to stick, but, they have been on for two years now and still look good.
You bring up another issue I thought of his week but didn't mention it in the post and that is the waxing it before the letters are installed! I think I'll leave the wax off it since it's jsut a couple days away from having it done!
Hey, thanks for the info.

The best cleaner for that "goo" is laquer thinner. I once wiped my whole truck down with it (wearing a respirator) and immediately buffed it out with a soft, clean rag. It removes wax and road debri, tar, bugs, and PAINT if you're not careful.
I had a 99.5 dually before and I removed the 4x4 decals with nothing but sunshine. I just let it sit in the sun for about three hours and they peeled right off(I had dark paint. Though light colors will still warm up good enough)........no adhesive residue was left at all. I have not removed them on my 2002 yet...I kinda like them. They don't seem so obnoxious. Yet anyway. I'll probably soon get tired of walking around my truck and seeing them, and thinking to myself: 4x4=16....4x4=16 and so on. :-X23
If you use a heat gun, that will break down the adhesive, and that is what makes it "gooey" and not willing to come off the paint. The idea is to get the glue to come off with the decal. If you have chrome or gold foil decals(they obviously don't come on new Fords, but this is just FYI)you can use a razor blade. !!YIKES!! yes it can be done. If someone replies requesting how this is achieved, I will respond with the details.
Thanks for all the replies! You guys are more helpful on this board! (I better go over to the other board to see if I've gotten an response yet!)
I just finished it an hour or so ago. I did go ahead and use a hairdryer and it worked great. After it was warm I just had to 'lift' a corner with a razor blade and sloooowly 'heat n pull'! As some of you mentioned, the idea was to heat it enough that the adhesive comes off with the plastic...and it did! I'd have let the sun warm it up for me but it would take too long here in SW Ohio..today anyway!
Thanks again.

when i got mine I took the dealer decal off the back and I used a little carb cleaner to get the glue off. again you got to be carefull.then you must wash the area quickly. then I rewaxed the area.
