I was wondering, what the stock pistons are made of, aluminum, or steel? I have a 351w out of my 83 bronco, and when I tore it down I thought the pistons were made of steel, but I don't remember, I have since put the engine back together and it's in storage. Also, the pistons in an 82 302 will use the same pistons being that both engines have a 4" bore right?
Ahh, alright, well, I figure they were steel cause I dropped a coupl of the pistons when I was puting the engine back together too put in storege and they did'nt have a ding or anything like I have seen on aluminum. So what kind of flat top pistons would be best for a torquey street truck engine. cast or milled? And who makes the best pistons that will last 300,000 miles.
Thanks fellas.
Ouch alone, that musta hurt.
Can I get those CP forged in just 4" bore for a none bored block?
Where can I get them? summit, jegs?
I asume the stock pistons are forged aluminum too, right?
They do have off the shelf pistons avilable so call them and ask for specifics...
CP pistons is a company started by former JE pistons engineers who don't believe in compromises when it comes to quality.....these pistons
along with ROSS have my vote for being among best in the crowded industry of manufacturers.
Getting the piston skirts coated with dry film moly lube coating will improve
the life of the engine by quite a bit and will even free up some ponies...
The lube coating gets extremely slippery when exposed to oil that it also helps dissapate heat associated with any friction by reducting that friction this help sengine life by avoiding the scoring of the bores over the life of the engine.
It usually runs about $120 to get the coating done.
Stock pistons are cast aluminum alloy.....
Only the higher performance engines got the forged alum alloy pistons....like the Boss302, Boss351, Boss429, SCJ 428's and the 427 cammer engines.
CP pistons does not do the coating I guess. Who does the coating that close by me in San Antonio, TX also, is that a good price for the coating?
Thanks bro.

You can Have CP send them to any of these people and have these people in turn send the finished product to your door.
prices for piston skirt coating runs in the $120-150 range (depending on piston circumference)
I felt a HUGE difference in power when it came to the new engine with the pistons being coated. Makes me wish I had taken the valve springs, roller lifters in for coatings.....
I had the pistons done (complete job) along with water shedding coating in the oil pan, lifter galley, rocker area, inside of timing cover.
I also had thermal barrier on pistons, valves, JBAs, Basani Y pipe,
I had thermal dispersant on intake, heads, valve covers, extrior of tming cover, water pump, thermostat housing, tranny oil pan, etc
