Its time for the service on the transmission. Do I need to replace the filter? I called oil changers, and they told me its 49.99 to drain and flush the transmission. Is that good enough?
Last week I asked one mechanic, and he told me 179. and that was to change the filter. Which route should I go? The truck has 56,000 miles. Thanks for the help
Definitely change the filter and make sure you/they drain the torque converter.....you should have to refill with ~14 qts. I did mine myself and parts alone cost around $65 so I don't know what you're getting for $49.99.
I'm servicing my transmission tomorrow (2/14). This will be my first time to do it myself (I hope some of you guys are monitoring the forum in case I have a question . I bought a new filter for $30 (and a new gasket for $20....just in case I mess the reuseable one up). The most painful purchase was 18 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic at $4.99 a quart (ouch...that hurt). I also have a Nordskog temperature sender to install in the inspection port.
If anyone sees a loud HELP in the forum tomorrow, please respond quickly
Shoot, I wouldnt even know where to start if I were to do it myself. I think Im goint to go with the filter change route. Thanks for all the help guys. I dont know about the synthetics though.... Thats a little too much money for me.
I'm going to tell my wife that instead of candy and roses for Valentine's day, I got her something unique.....synthetic transmission fluid. Do you think that will go over well?

Well I just told my wife, and she said if I did that, I'd be packing my clothes in the expy when I was done

Candy and roses are way overrated. The candy will just make her, errr fat, and the roses are already dead. My philosophy is to get her something that will last. This year was a new griddle (not girdle ).
I just finished servicing my transmission. Here's what I did:
drain and drop the pan
replace transmission filter (next time remember to keep bucket under transmission)
clean transmission pan including magnet (really nasty)
drain torque converter (drains really slooooow)
reinstall plug on troque converter
reinstall transmission pan
torque everything to specs
remove inspection port and install temp. sending unit for gauge
add six quarts of ATF (Mobil 1 synthetic)
spend next hour with truck idling while adding ATF @ 1/2 quart shots
It took 14.5 quarts to bring it to the 1/2 way mark in the hot region of the dipstick. So far, nothing seems to be leaking.
BTW, The test drive was to the store to get my wife something for Valentine's Day. I didn't think the Mobil 1 synthetic would go over well.

Thanks for the info, I might tackle that next weekend. I wonder if it the same amount for the 4.6?
