Unhappy '98 Explorer- Check Engine Light

My Check Engine light just came on recently on my '98 Ford Explorer, so I had a friend hook his Diagnostic Device to it. He said that one bank (SOHC 4.0L) had 2 cylinders running lean and the other had one. He said that it was either the Intake Gaskets leaking or the Intake Manifold was cracked. Is this a common problem with that engine? And if the Intake is cracked, can it be repaired with an expoxy or something because I'm under the impression that it is made of some composite material? If I have to replace the Intake, is there some aftermarket Intake that is better than the stock one? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Regards, Marv

Its a common thing in the 4.0 sohc to have leaking intake gaskets. Its usally the lower gaskets. I haven't heard to many people that have had a cracked intakes but its very possible. I replaced my lower intake gaskets this winter and it fixed my problem. The new gaskets I bought from the dealer seemed to be a bit thicker than the ones I took out so they my have upgrades the part. By the way, does your explorer idle rough on cold start, thats a big sympton of the intake leak. You also may want to check out your IAC. Their is a good artical on it on the main forum page at the top labeled "sticky".

Thx ltfox!! Yes, it started running rough when it was cold and the weather got cold- as if the choke was not set on a Carb. The Check Engine Light appeared a few weeks later. I'll check out that article on IAC. Thanks again.
