I don't know the answer to this, but I may learn more this Tuesday. My 2003 XLT has one grid (right in the middle where it's irratating) that will be worked on under warrenty. Initially the dealership said they would have to order a rear window and repace it. Then after a week or so, they said they could repair the grid. I alway thought those were imbedded in the glass, but I've never looked that closely. I'll see what happens on Tuesday.
Need to look for brakes in the grid. You need a magnifying glass to see the brakes. You can get the copper repair kit at your local auto parts store. It's eazy to fix.
When I looked at this page again, I noticed an add on the right. Looks like you can order a repair kit for around $20 (plus S&H I'm sure) which beats a new window by a bunch. The products are listed at http://www.frostfighter.com/ff_products.htm . I don't have any idea how good or bad these guys are, like I said they have an add on this forum.
I had the repair performed under warrenty on Tuesday, and today was the first time with a decent frost to test it out. It worked, so the grids can be repaired. Looking at the repair, it appears that a conductive material was painted on between some masking tape to make a clean line
