Hey do any of you guys know the easiest way to tighten the high pressure power steering hose at the pump on a 5.4 superduty? I want to see if I could stop the leak because the dealer can't look at it till Friday of this week. I went under there armed with an assortment of wrenches and there is no way to get a wrench on the fitting it's about 1/4" away from the pulley. Unless there is a special wrench for this job the only way i can see to access the fitting is to take the pulley off which would be a pain in it's self or take the pump out of the truck. Any info would be greatly apprieciated.
If the hose was over-tightened (as someone suggested earlier), then tightening it more will only make the leak worse. If you can, try to tolerate it just two more days then let the "pros" work on it.
Yeah, but you don't want to give them any reason/excuse to say it's YOUR fault. But, if you want to give it a try, get a thin flare nut wrench and try to tighten the connection. You should be able to find one that will fit in the tight space at a tool store.
I tried two different kinds of flare nut wrenches the standard kind and a bluepoint one that opens up to slide over the line then clamps around the fitting but there is absolutely no room that's why I was thinking that maybe there is a special wrench specificly for this task. Also It might be accessible with a crows foot, anyway I guess I will have to be without my truck at least 1 more day which brings to total up to 31 days in the shop in 6 months of ownership.
Both, the fitting is just about touching the pulley and a typical flarenut wrench is to thick to fit around the fitting without hitting the pulley there is just no room and it's also hard to get at in the first place you need two or three elbows but the good lord only gave me one like I said it might be a job for a crows foot but I will let the dealer try one more time and if they can't do it I will bring it to another dealer.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Mar-02 AT 09:27 PM (EST)]Hey NoMo just got back from the dealer and apparently the power steering pump is leaking not the hose so back to the shop it goes they said it's a 2 hour job but you know how that goes. I also talked to the GM of the dealership about a new truck and he is going to talk to the Rep next week and he also said that he will try to put a deal together to take the truck back and give me a new one.

My brother had a power steering pump go bad on his 99 SD V10 at 50k. There must be something wrong with the design that they would go bad so soon. I would think a dealer could replace a pump in less than 2 hours. It is pretty simple if you have the right press to pull/press the pulley on the new pump. We were able to replace his in about 2 hours and neither of us had done it before. Good Luck.
Got my new reman. power steering pump installed today It took the tech. about 3 hours to put it in Ford only pays 1.6 hours to do the job so he didn't make much money but the leak is gone but when he wiped the fluid off the frame and other components he also wiped the undercoating off down to the bare metal which is probally rusting as I type this message I'm going to get a can tomorrow and touch it up. I talked to the GM at the dealer and he wants to meet with me on Tuesday to discuss me getting a new truck so hopefully my headache will go away.
Sorry to here that you are having so many problems with your truck. Not sure how helpful this will be but??? One week after picking up my wife's Lincoln LS we discovered that ther was grey primer sprayed under the clearcoat. We requested that the regional Ford rep meet with us and the GM of the dealer. After 30 minutes of talking about the problem The regional rep ordered us a new car. The GM was not as cooperative. If I were you I would find your local ford rep and have him meet was you and the GM. Have all of your records handy and tell him exactly what you expect. It worked for my wife and I.
