I was very upset yesterday when I found a tiny rust hole, not even 1/8", in the bottom corner of my 86's drivers side door. It dosn't even go all the way through. What is the best way to take care of this. I brushed some plasticote rust converter on it, but I don't know if it's good enough. I'd like to fill the hole and touch it up, but I want to make sure it isn't going to come back first.
Thanks for the tips. The truck is very nice. Very little rust, but this is the first spot on the door. I want it dead! The hole isn't even deep, but I guess it's through the first layer. The truck has original black paint. It isn't as shiny as it used to be, but it's still too nice to repaint, and with a nice coat of wax is very presentable. After I rubbed it out and waxed it all my friends though I got it painted! It should be easy enough to paint that corner after I do whatever I have to do with it.
What kind of wax would I fill in the hole with? What would I do to stop the rust? What if I put a little filler in it? What sounds like a better idea?
So far I just scraped it clean with a knife, it could be made cleaner if I sanded it through the paint. I put some naval jelly on it but it dosn't look much different. Then I put some rust inhibitor on it, but i'm not really satisfied yet.
I also have a rust problem My trucks drive shaft is covered in rust. I also have rust around the fuel filler neck.I bought this truck used a month ago.I have not found any rust anywhere else.Should i try and take thr rust off the drive shaft or is this normal. Also what can i do about the rust around the filler neck. I did a carfax on my truck it came up clear. thanks 4 your help
I use a product called Rust-Mort that's excellent for getting surface rust off frames, driveshafts, axles, cab floors, and the odd place where rust gets through the paint. For a rust spot on a door I'd use something like Rust-Mort or equivelant then with a brush touch it up with a rust inhibiting primer. If the blemish is deep, fill it with a splash of bondo then just use automotive touch up paint to finish up. The key is stopping it early. I have cab corners to do because the previous owner hid the problem rather than deal with it
same advice here dont let it go out of control had a small piece form where the door hinges are and now i have to pick up the door but maybe its the pin?
I used a little bit of meugar's wax on a nick out of the paint (to the bare metal, that is) on my grand am. that was 2 1/2 years ago, and still no rust.
Well, I started on this thing tonight, I'll have to finish tommorow. Let me know what you guys think about this:
I put a flap wheel (sandpaper) in my drill and took down all the high spots down, and took the whole area down to bare metal, till it was shiny. Then I took a sandpaper drum in my dremel and cleaned up the hole, getting the loose jagged edges out. Then I put a little wire wheel in my dremel to clean the rust out from in the hole and from the little pits in the metal around it. Then I even wet sanded it to get it nice and smooth (less the pits) and to feather in the edge of the paint. Then I wiped it down with prepsol to remove all the dust and moisture, and dried the area. Next I brushed on some plasticote rust inhibitor. (That's where I'm at now)
Tommorow morning I'll brush some more of that stuff on there, and let it sit up a while. I think I have another kind of spray on rust inhibitor I may spray on over that just for peace of mind. Then I'll spray on some rustoleum brown primer. Let that sit. Put a thin skim of bondo across it to fill in the small hole and small pits in the metal. Sand that down. Prime again, give a couple of coats of gloss black over it, let it set a week, rub it out to blend it in. In between steps maybe I'll even get some studying in for my physics 101 test monday! I picked a bad weekend to start on this, but I really wanted to take it out before it gets worse.
Anyway, how's my plan sound? I don't want to have it bubbling up again in 6 months, or EVER Anything else I should do? Thanks!

well, all is going well so far, although this is taking longer than expected. I work on it for ten minutes every hour. Now I'm waiting for the last coat of rust inhibitor to dry so i can prime over it. It says it's best to wait 24 hours, but I don't have that luxury. The last was put on 3 hours ago, and it's not as tacky anymore. After another hour or so I'll get it primed, that should dry fast, then bondo, that should be set in a half hour, or hour, then I can sand and prime again. Another half hour and topcoat. I guess I'll do 3 or 4 topcoats, about a half hour apart, maybe an hour. I wish it was warmer in the garage. I've been using a heat gun to help it set.
