There is a throttle positioning device on my Carter YFA that is malfunctioning. It has a single electrical hookup and a "pushrod" that extends fully when the ignition is OFF.
Now it will not allow the throttle to return (when vehicle is fully warmed) to a curb idle speed. (idle screw is not bottomed out, fast idle screw is off cam)
I think this part is called a "throttle dashpot" and it used to work...let the throttle down easy and all the way to idle.
I am sure I could get a slower idle if I just removed it but that is not how I like to fix things.
Also, my actual throttle cable is worn.....perhaps the spring on it has lost the strength to compress the pushrod on that dashpot That seems farfetched but do not know.
If these devices go bad...or if there is some lubrication or adjustment that I could make...please advise.
I had the same problem but my carb has an adjustment on the throttle lever where the end of that plunger hits. I just screwed it in a little and problem was solved. I hope this helps.
To reiterate, this is not a vacuum controlled device....must be an electronic control solenoid.
Another clarification: It seems to allow a slower idle when the engine is first kicked down off fast idle. When engine is fully warm, then the idle gets up there and cannot be "slowed" . A rev of the engine will not knock it down.
I did not see the adjustment that Gator52 mentions..my vehicle one year older (if his post refers to the 84 Ford listed). I will look again.
If I do need a new throttle cable perhaps someone knows the best lowest price place to get one...I am sure it is not at the Ford Dealer. Thanks
