Hey all i need advice please im thinking about buying a 1976 f-100 for 500 dollars the body and interior are beautiful not a thing wrong with it but... there's a bad knock in the engine which im pretty sure is piston bearings by the way it has a 360 with a c6 , but the guy says he'll sell me a really nice 302 and c4 that was in his truck for an extra 500 which brings the total price to 1000 dollars any ways im wondering if it would be easier to fix the 360 or if it would be easier to put that nice 302 in it and what modifications would i have to make for the 302 to fit if any?
If the 302 and the C4 are already mated, then only minor mods will be needed to the systems that connect to the engine. I would suggest buying the truck as is and finding a good motor to replace it with of the same family size. All depends really on your cash flow, what you want to do with the truck, and how long you are willing to wait. Personally, I won't ever put a 302 into a truck. I know a lot of guys here swear by them, and that's perfectly fine by me. To me,, it's a car motor. Hopefully one of them that has a 302 will post as well so you can get both sides of the issue. Either way,, Buy That Truck! Body and interior in perfect condition alone are worth well more than $1,000. Congrats on the good deal.
Keep the 360 and rebuild it. Going to a 302 would be a step backwards in power and torque. In order to swap an engine you almost need a donor truck to get all of the pieces that you need.

damn straight!!!
I have a 302 in my truck and i will take a 300 I6 over it anyday in a truck.
buy the truck and rebuild the motor. you still have to by parts the get the C4/302 to fit including a driveshaft.
it may cost a little more to rebuild the 360, but you'll end up with a better motor.
Go with a 390!! They have more hp and will probably get better gas mileage. I have a 302 in an 86 and it is a dog. Probably just the engine. Anyway, the c-6 is a better tranny.
Mark
definately buy it...it is a steal at that price (paid 1500 for mine, and about dropped my jaw to do it, in illinois these trucks are so cheap if you know where to look, but here in washington that is the going price.)
whatever engine you decide to go with, happy driving/playing
