This afternoon my truck would not start. Glow plugs work, have fuel from the mechanical pump. No fuel pressure at the injector. only a drip. Is this a sign of a bad injector pump?
I would like an opinion before I spend money for another one.
Thanks, Ricky
Where did you check the flow from the lift pump? If fuel is coming out of the lift pump, is the filter working or is it plugged up? Is there fuel going to the injection pump? If it is going to the injection pump and not coming out of the lines under pressure --- the injection pump is bad. Keep us posted. Also, if you are removing the injection pump, take it off the engine like a huge butterfly ... dont remove the cover from the engine with the gear inside. Take the little cover off the front of the pump area (the one with the 2 1/2 inch head bolts). Inside there is 3 little 5.16 12 point bolts to remove and the rest of the bolts holding the pump to the tower ( 3 9/16 nuts) Loosen the injection lines from the injectors and it will let you slide the pump back and out of the truck. A whole easier to install and time this way.
You will only get a small drip from the high pressure fuel line when you open it. The fuel injection pump simply pumps fuel. The resistance to the flow of this fuel is what makes the pressure rise. Since the resistance to the flow is made in the injector you won't get any pressure because the line is open going to the injector. You will also get a very small amount of fuel. If you figeure how many time that injection pump injects fuel in twenty or so miles to burn one eightth of a gallon of gas. Each injection stroke will be really small.
