302-351w swap.

I am getting a 351w from my dad's friend, he has had this engine for several years and it was supposed to be for a truck he owned, but has sence sold. He got the engine for free. His friend used too be a tech teacher at some engine college and Ford would give them engines now and then so the students could tear it down and rebuild it, it has never been started up.
Well, he bought the whole rebuild kit dirt cheap from another friend. Man I need friends like that.
Well he just wants it out of his shop.
My 302 is on it's last legs and I can't afford to get it bored and rebuilt right now.
I'm just wanting too know if I am prepared to do the swap.

1. I know that I may have too change my duel exhaust.
2. I think the motor mounts will fit both engines.
3. Do the exhaust manifolds fit both engines?
4. Do I have too modify the throttle cable.
5. Anything else I should check?

Thanx fellas.

Free is good. Is the engine complete with balancer, flywheel, intake, distributor, exhaust manifolds, accessory brackets? What tranny do you have?
The swap is a direct bolt as far as motor mounts and fitting the engine bay, and mating to the tranny. You may be able to modify your exhaust to work as the 351 is only slightly taller and wider than the 302 and will thus change the location of exhaust outlets a little bit. Your throttle cable should be fine. The heads and exhaust manifolds can be swapped between either engine, but like lobuck said the flywheel/dampener counterweight changed in the 302.
Pre-1980 302 had a 28-ounce balance, 1980 and later were a 50-ounce balance, and the 351 has always been a 28 ounce balance. Hope this helps.

sounds like a sweet deal, the swap is pretty straight forward. you will need a new dizzy and intake if the 351 doesnt have those on it. also the oil pan is different to. you will need 28oz flywheel/flexplate as well like m1 said. mounts are the same and linkage will be fine. I would take this time to find some headers and junk the stock manifolds it will really wake things up. what size carb is on your 302 now ? might rebuild it or go new if you can spring that one. ebay has a lot of manifolds and carbs in good condition for good prices regarding the 351

good luck

The motor is all complete as far as I know. I think it even came with a 650 or 680 CFM 4bbr holley. It definetly has the oil pan.
Don't have jack for money right now, but ehwn I do have enough for headers and a new exhaust, then I'll do it, but for now, since the 302 exhaust manifolds will fit, I'm bolting them to the 351w.
I figure when I have the money to redo the exhaust, the bolts should not have any rust, so the risk of breaking bolts will not be there.
I'll check on the balancer, it should have it. It doesent have accessories, hence it was never used, but I think all of my 302 stuff will fit, alternator, air cond. compressor, ect....

I just did the same swap. Since the 351 is wider, you may have to extend the exhaust if you have one of the exhaust pipes going directly under the oil paun like my dual exhaust. Now the throttle adapter, which bolts to the intake is different. The bolt pattern is totally different, but you can probably find a replacement at a bone yard for alomost nothing. The distributor is definitly different; mainly the gear and the dist. shaft to the oil pump are bigger are bigger. Either then that it should bolt right up. Good luck.

PS
What type of ignition are using? Because if you are going to use a EEC-IV ignition(moduale is on the distributor) then I might have an extra.

What all ignition maduls can I use, or what years will fit, just wondering. I know that the size of the engine doesent matter, but is there certain years that ford changed them?
Also, I guess that I can just take the flywheel, crank pulley, and harmonic balancer from my 83 351w and use it on the new one?

OK. Like I said earlier. They changed ignitions I think in 84, and started using engine controlled computers. The ignition module is on the distributor for most. They rely on emission sensors to run the motor correctly. If you do not install all of the required sensors and emission junck, you can either stick with the Dura-spark ignition, which is on your 83 or go to a bone yard like I did to get all of the duraspark parts. You can also up grade to a MSD ignition, alittle costly, but worth it. The following part numbers are what you would need and their corresponding approximate costs.

MSD 6AL PN# 6420 $201.99
MSD coil PN# 8207 $37.99
MSD distributor PN# 8598 $283.40

Also centechwire.com has an integrated igntion system, similar to the 80's GM version, but specific for Fords for around $300. Everything is all located under the distributor cap. This distibutor has been shown on HorsePower tv accouple of times.

Let me know if I missed anything.
