Troubles with fuel filter (plastic)

Question for all of you who change your own fuel filters...Is anyone else having trouble with the plastic breaking?

Initally changed fuel filters at 10,000 miles. During the process of opening the cap on the engine fuel filter, the cap cracked. Replaced cap.
Just yesterday changed the filters at 20,000 miles. Upon removing the engine fuel filter we noticed it was twisted - like it did not turn with the cap when the cap was replaced. Upon further investigation the plastic part(sorry, do not know what the exact part it) in the middle(which is supposed to be attached to the casing) broke off when the filter was removed.
Towed into Ford for the new parts.

Anyone else having small problems like this? Any suggestions?

Also replacing the steering gear box. It is suspected that it cracked due to the cold. Ford said they are replacing quite a few of them up here.

Thanks in advance!

Changed at 10,000 after returning from round trip to Kansas and back to Alaska - very dirty filters. Changed again at 20,000 - much cleaner. Just cautious.

tn mac,
You were asking why I change fuel filters every 10,000 miles. My dad has been working as a diesel mechanic for the United Parcel Service for over 30 years. He has had many tractors go between 1 million and 2 million miles without ever dropping an oil pan or pulling a head. And the 7.3's in all the big package cars have went over 500,000 miles. A person can't get much harder on a vehicle than a UPS driver. This is what my dad recommended to me. The manual on the 6.0 says 15,000 miles. This is one thing that I don't think is worth going to the max on. It is preventive maintenance. Don't give it a chance to break. I may spend a bit more money, but it is worth it in the long run.

I agree it is money well spent to maintain you truck,at a high level I just have never changed fuel filters that often if you buy good fuel and run additive they last for a long time. It seems like the plastic was a poor choice for the filter cap.
