Got my new 02 250SD 4X4 5.8 6spd 4.10 LB RCab a week ago as a direct replacement to my 99. It ain't the same truck! Sure the engine is more HP but ya coulda fooled me as it's the same power. Aside from that I don't think sheet metal are a swap at all. Doors are thinner and lighter, tailgate weighs a third less, rise (hump) in the hood is 3/4 inch higher. I'm still getting used to that short throw 6spd with a clutch that grabs at the floor thats sticky as hell shifting, more plastic parts on the engine. My old 99 was a better built heavy duty truck IMO Trimman

Seems too many people are asking for better MPG and Ford may be listening. Not that I think wanting better MPG is an unreasonable request but they (Ford) has got to lighten it somewhere. Better the sheet metal than the frame and axles, IMO. AT least in a wreck, most things driving on the road will pass underneath the truck.

I don't see the problem with that. I'm all for more humping. (of the hood)
Not that anybody cares about my opinion but I am impressed with the 5.4 that I have. I have loaded the truck down with the legal limits according to the state I live in and there is plenty of power.
I am fortunate enought to have a '99 F-350 CC Dual PSD and a 2001 F-450 CC Dual PSD. The point I am trying to make is that people are trying to power a F250 to do the job of a 350 or 450. I know if you were to stick to the letter of the law as far as GVWR then we all would hardly ever haul anything, thats not the point.
There is a considerable difference between the axles of a 250 to a 350 and its not even comparable to a 450 at all.
I have asked several people on this site that own SD's with the 5.4 and they all seem to be real happy.
I am just ramblin here, ther is really no point, I guess.

If yer talking SRW trucks, the 250 and 350 ('02 spec) both have the same D60 up front and Sterling 10.5 out back. Now the dually is another matter. As is the F450.
I was just on a "kick". There are several guys around here that try to use the 250's for much more than its designed for, then complain when something breaks. A classic example is my neighbor hauling two round bails on his F-250 (2300+ lbs) across the hilly pasture and feed lots. All of a sudden he notices that the frame is broken behind the cab.
I typically always use the 450 to haul and feed with and sometimes use the 250 to haul light stock loads from town...it does a great job with 10,000lbs up and over hills.
I think sometimes that we can simply over-power these pickups to a fault.
My mistake with that 5.8 thing, it's the 5.4 sure enough. I've got no problems with the 5.4 as thats all the engine I need and just love the gas mileage, I just thought with the added HP I'd see a difference that's all. Closing the tailgate with only one hand is an advantage as I'm getting older, the hump I like better on the hood. The doors are so light you need to slam them unless a window is half open. That 6spd will take some getting used to as it's new and I'm still driving a 5spd in my head. All in all it's a great truck! Maybe a little different than my 99 but I'll manage very well. Us old folks don't like too much change in a product that your used to and come to depend on. OK now! who knows what my new 06 will look like? Trimman
Concerning the matter of not feeling the added horsepower...Give the engine a couple of thousand miles to loosen up.I had a new 4.6 Ford last summer that was an absolute dog at lower rpms. After about 3000 miles it loosened up and really came alive.Give your new 5.4 a few miles to "wake up".
musta been a light f250 to have cracked the frame, or kind of defect. I can't imagine cracking an SD frame with just around a ton in the bed. I've hauled twice that and have had no such issues. In addition I'd be interested in learning how that guy got 2 round bails in the bed of his truck. I can only get one to fit in mine.
That's an easy one Charles. He simply put the "one-ton" bale on its end and stacked another one on top of it
I must have waaaay toooo much time on my hands:7
Ok, guess I need to clarify, we use the Dew Ezee(think that how you spell it)beds. It is a flatbed with hyldraulic lift arms. You lift and put one up on the bed and grab the second and keep it in the arms and push up against the one thats in the bed...they don't go anywhere.
Its real hard to explain, if I had a digital camera I would post a pic.
